What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Baelo Claudia for its remarkably preserved Roman ruins, offering a fascinating glimpse into ancient life and industry, particularly its fish-salting heritage. The stunning coastal location and free EU entry are significant draws, though some mention the need for better roof maintenance and appreciate the quiet atmosphere, especially in winter.
"Driving the coastal route from Málaga to Cádiz, Baelo Claudia provided a fascinating insight into the methods the Romans used for preserving fish, fishing for tuna, and producing ‘garum’ - a fish sauce delicacy.
Managing to survive an earthquake and pirate raids, it stands as one of Spain’s most complete Roman towns.
Efficient, clean set-up – well worth stopping off for."

"Beautiful peace of history that gives you good intentions of the city structure and citizens' lives. Surrounded by stunning views. Free admission, we could gladly pay 5 to 8 euro per person to contribute to building maintenance (the roof is leaking) and fund further excavation. I'm tremendously happy that we stopped on a sunny day!"

"Live like a Roman!
This was our second visit to this place and it still amazes me. As you walk through the city you can feel the history and connect to the thousands of people who lived, loved, worked and died here. You can walk the same roads, see the same views, and feel the same breeze as they would have 2,300 years ago. On our first visit my daughter was 7 years and just wanted an ice cream. 15 years later, she has taken to her dad's love of all things old!"
