Reviews Summary

The Santa María de Gobiendes Pre-Romanesque Church is a historically significant site, praised for its ancient architecture and beautiful natural surroundings. Visitors appreciate the preserved pre-Romanesque window and the insights gained from summer guided tours. However, some renovations have altered its original appearance, and local festivities can be disruptive.

"The church of Santiago de Gobiendes was declared a Historical-Artistic Monument in 1931 by the Provisional Government of the Second Republic.
Built in the 10th century and partially rebuilt in the 19th century, it has a basilicaltá floor plan divided into three naves.
The interior is covered with wood, except for the side chapels at the head, which are covered with a barrel vault.
The naves are separated by small semicircular brick arches. The capitals of the columns are decorated with acanthus leaves.
The window in the south wall is preserved from the pre-Romanesque period, on which the date of rebuilding, several capitals and remains of another window were inscribed.
The church was rebuilt in the 19th century and was restored between 1985 and 1987. The landscape that surrounds it is of extraordinary beauty."

"Late pre-Romanesque church, 10th century. It has three naves and beautiful stained-glass windows. It was renovated in the 19th century, and the stonework of the lower walls was covered up rather clumsily. The floor is paved with geometric patterns. The interior is not visible from the outside. Guided tours are available during the summer for €2.50; tickets can be purchased at the Sueve Interpretation Center, a building on the right 100 meters before the church, where there is ample parking. There are good views of the coast, the Gobiendes Palace, and a short, easy, flat path to the Obaya spring."

"Church of Santiago de Gobiendes (9th century), in Gobiendes (Colunga, Asturias). Pre-Romanesque church, with a three-aisle basilica (the central nave separated from the side naves by semicircular arches with brick voussoirs), a straight tripartite chevet, and vaulted chapels (the side ones are original, the central one extensively renovated in the 17th and 18th centuries). Structurally, it draws heavily on the works of Santullano, Bendones, and especially San Pedro de Nora. In the 1853 renovation, the portico was added (partially destroying the original tripartite portico), along with another vestry and the bell gable. During the Spanish Civil War (1936), the sacred images were supposedly removed and burned in a bonfire (I still believe that church burnings actually conceal the theft and sale of artistic heritage). Thanks to the architectural restoration (1983-89) by Magín Berenguer Díez, who recovered the original volume, and the parallel archaeological intervention by Emilio Olávarri Goicoechea (1932-2002), we know more and can now admire much of what it was originally."
