Reviews Summary
Visitors find Igrexa de San Tomé to be a small, welcoming, and well-maintained church with a familiar feel, particularly due to its beautiful 16th-century mural paintings. While some note its minimal restoration, the historical significance and artistic merit are consistently praised.
"San Tomé de Nogueira is a parish in the municipality of Meis in which there is a beautiful complex formed by the church and the cemetery, with a good cross. The church is located on the slope of a hill where the remains of an old Romanized fort and a votive altar with an inscription from the end of the 2nd century were found. Its location responds to a clear intention to eliminate pagan rites by building a Christian temple. Only the apse is preserved from its original Romanesque design. The separation of the apse from the nave is opened by a semicircular triumphal arch with a sharp edge and which rests on two columns with deliveries and plant motifs on their capitals. Based on the style of the triumphal arch, historians date the origins of the temple to around 1170. However, the true beauty of the temple lies in the 16th-century mural paintings in the apse, with the representation of the Annunciation, presided over by the Pantocrator, and figures on both sides of the pediment of the pediment: the adoration of the Magi, on the Epistle side, the birth of the child Jesus, on the Gospel side, and the embrace before the Golden Gate of Jerusalem, in the lower part, which represents the miraculous conception of the Virgin in the womb of Saint Anne. In the barrel vault, a painting of a starry sky with the sun and the moon."
