Masca is lauded for its breathtaking, almost surreal scenery and the impressive feat of building a village in such a dramatic mountain setting. However, the challenging, narrow roads and limited parking are frequently cited drawbacks, alongside the difficulty in securing permits for the popular gorge hike.
"Pretty nice and calm place. Not that all special if you are used to mountains and rocks though. The view from the village to seaside is nice and the fact that they built a village here is impressive. The road leading up to the village is very narrow so we went with the 355 bus from Santiago to avoid potential stress. At the time we went (14:00 on a September Sunday) it wasnt too bad with tourists. Considering the effort to get to this place I wouldnt call it worthwhile."
