"It connects the Polígono Infante Juan Manuel in Murcia with the Vistabella neighborhood through the urban channel of the Segura River. The project and the model were born in 1965 due to the growth of the southern neighborhoods of the city and the circulation problem in that area far from the only two bridges existing at the time. It was built by the former MOPU (Ministry of Development) between 1967 and 1969, taking advantage of the new channeling of the urban section of the Segura River that affected that area. It is a bridge made of reinforced concrete beams without intermediate pillars (the first bridge in Murcia that did not have them), which prevents stagnation of reeds and waste from occurring during times of flooding, something common in the Segura River. Open to two-way traffic, it has three lanes in one direction and two in the opposite direction, something that allows it to be today one of the bridges with the highest traffic density in the city by connecting two avenues with heavy traffic, Avenida Primero de Mayo and Ronda Sur."

Architectural Significance
Its design reflects the urban growth of Murcia in the mid-20th century, addressing the circulation problems caused by the limited number of bridges at the time. The bridge's capacity, with three lanes in one direction and two in the opposite, makes it one of the highest traffic density bridges in the city, effectively connecting major avenues like Avenida Primero de Mayo and Ronda Sur.
This architectural approach not only solved practical issues but also created a visually distinct landmark. The clean lines and robust concrete construction offer a modern aesthetic that contrasts with older structures, making it a point of interest for those appreciating urban infrastructure and design.
The Segura River's Role
The absence of intermediate pillars in the bridge's design was a direct benefit to the river's ecosystem and management. By allowing a clear passage, it minimized obstructions that could trap debris, thus reducing the risk of blockages and exacerbating flood conditions. This foresight in engineering has contributed to the river's improved management over the decades.
Today, the riverbanks around Puente de la Fica are part of Murcia's efforts to create recreational spaces. The recent installation of solar-powered LED lighting along the left bank of the Segura River, from Contraparada to Malecón, enhances the enjoyment of the 'Murcia Río' project, turning the area into a hub for sports, leisure, and outdoor activities.
