What Travellers Say

Reviews Summary

While some visitors find Porta de Mazarelos to be a simple archway, its historical significance as the last remaining medieval gate and a traditional pilgrim entrance is widely acknowledged. It's appreciated for its connection to the city's heritage and the historical routes of trade and pilgrimage, though some note its somewhat neglected appearance and the ongoing vehicle traffic.

"Nothing really to see, you just walk through it into the old city. Apparently, it’s the only survived original ach from the old days. Today, pilgrims from the south direction enter the city through it."

Ira Hoyer

"Historic entrance and only surviving archway around the previously fortified Old Town albeit it's a bit neglected. It's also where the pilgrims from Seville and Ourense direction enter Santiago. It was also used by the wine merchants who transported wines from Ribeiro using mules a route which dates back to the 12th Century or even earlier. So overall given its historical significance it's a real important part of Santiago's heritage. It's a shame that vehicles can still pass through when leaving the Old Town."

Mark Auchincloss

"initial impressions of Santiago our 1st and only morning there. Very lively!"
