What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about Thalkote Lake's magical morning ambiance and the breathtaking dual-rock panorama. The serene waters, especially during sunrise and sunset, offer a soul-refreshing experience. While some note varying water levels, the opportunity for affordable boat rides and the scenic village trail add to its charm as a hidden gem near Sigiriya.
"A magical morning at Thalkote Lake —
Last month, I had the soul-refreshing joy of kayaking across this serene stretch of water, cradled between the iconic Sigiriya and Pidurangala rocks. Alone in my boat, I glided through still waters as the golden morning light danced across the lake's surface. From one spot, you witness both majestic giants rising above the treetops — a view to remember.
Birdsong filled the air, and the occasional rustle hinted at crocodiles basking nearby. The wind whispered strong across the lake, adding a touch of thrill to each stroke — a gentle reminder that nature rewards the steady and strong.
For those seeking this tranquil experience, local guides offer kayaking for around LKR 5,000(for two boats and one guide), including life jackets for safety. The best time? Before 9 a.m. when the breeze is soft and the sun still gentle. After that, the heat grows fierce, and the waters less inviting.
Leave your valuables ashore, carry only your sense of wonder, and let the moment carry you. In that hour on the water, with the heritage rocks watching over and the world hushed, you’ll feel a deeper connection to Sri Lanka’s wild heart."

"This is the perfect place if you wanna see both the Sigiriya rock and Pidurangala rock in one frame. The view is stunning with the thalkote tank, the two popular rocks and the greenery surrounded.
The view is known to be more beautiful when there’s enough water in the tank. Unfortunately, there was no much water in the tank when we visited. Don’t forget to take out your drone if you have one, since the tank(wewa) is in one side and there’s a green paddy field on the other side of the sandy road.
If you visit Sigiriya, this is a must go place. ♥️"
