"Kondagala is a scenic mountain peak located above the first commercial tea estate called Loolecondera in Sri Lanka. Hike to Kondagala via Loolecondere, hikers Kondagala peak using the Kandy Deltota road. After passing Deltota town, you must take the Hewaheta road, and then reach the Loolecondera Tea Estate. Begin your hike by starting from the estate.
While on top of Kondagala, hikers must be mindful because of the rocky surface, the 90-degree edge and sudden mist.
At Loolecondera Estate in Kandy, the first patch of tea was planted as a test following the failure of coffee cultivation in Sri Lanka. Young 21 year old James Taylor, was in charge of the plantation. He immortalized himself with the wild success of the plantation. Later has become a part of post colonization history of Sri Lanka.
You can enjoy the fantastic view of the surrounding mountain ranges sitting on Taylor’s Seat. The same rock seat used by James Taylor. The chimney of the log cabin which was used by Taylor (only remaining part of the cabin). And also initial patch of tea which was planted by Taylor now known as the No.7 field of the Loolkandura (Loolecondera) Estate.
James Taylor made a unique decision to name the estate. Taylor named his estate “Loolecondera” as a tribute to the local name Loolkandura, which he spelled as it was originally called, unlike other planters who chose English names for their estates."

"I recently completed Stage 2 of the Pekoe Trail—from Galaha to Loolkandura—and it was one of the most rewarding hikes I’ve done in Sri Lanka.
The trail splits into two main parts: Galaha to Deltota, and Deltota to Loolkandura. For a more manageable start,(if you want to skip the first bits) I suggest taking a local bus from Galaha Junction to Deltota, then another bus to Hewaheta. From there, you can walk to the Loolkandura Estate trailhead. There's a small entrance fee to enter the estate.
The trail is well-marked, but facilities are limited along the way, so pack plenty of water, snacks, and rain gear. I also recommend starting early to beat the midday heat. Keep in mind that the last bus from Deltota to Kandy leaves around 4:30 PM. Trail pass through small villages, tea estates, pine forests, and even the legendary James Taylor’s cottage—the birthplace of Ceylon tea.
Highly recommend this hike if you’re looking for a meaningful and scenic trek with a deep connection to Sri Lanka’s tea legacy. Not easy, but 100% worth it."
