"NO TOUCHING OR FEEDING TURTLES!!! :)
Visited on a weekday, 3pm, September, read many reviews saying the beach wasn’t clean, it was perfectly clean! Looked beautiful, some free parking spots right next to here, we got lucky getting a spot immediately! Beach was a little busy but plenty of space, i can imagine, peak season and the weekend can be hectic!
Beautiful waters, wasn’t crystal clear on this occasion, as waves were churning the sand, couldn’t see much underwater. Waves are a little rough! But fun!
There are turtles! Who would have thought! A few signs saying DO NOT touch or feed them, however some locals were throwing seaweed into the water and handing to tourists, and some were touching the turtles, a shame, i hope they are just ignorant and not purposely ignoring the rules! Life guards did actually blow their whistle and intervene when some tourists were touching them, which is good to see!
Overall great beach! Worth the hype, on a weekday at least"

"Easy to find turtles - just watch where the groups of people are pointing at the water. There are also people there who you can pay to find a turtle and entice them with food closer to the beach - not my choice but you can take advantage of other people doing so. Just be careful not to stand to close your a turtle when the tide surges as having fifty kilo of turtle smack into your shins is no fun.
Some evenings during hatching they also release baby turtles which is nice.
However the beach is generally pretty packed and there is a lot of rubbish piled up in places. It looks like they have taken it off the beach, but it doesn’t really go anywhere from there."

Understanding the Sea Turtles
Many visitors are eager to get up close, but it's vital to adhere to responsible tourism practices. Touching or feeding the turtles can disrupt their natural behaviors, lead to illness, and even cause them harm. While some locals might offer to entice turtles closer with food for a fee, it's best to observe them from a respectful distance. Signs are often posted reminding visitors of these rules, and lifeguards may intervene if they see people breaking them.
During certain times of the year, there's also a chance to witness baby turtle releases, which can be a heartwarming experience. However, these events are often managed by conservation efforts, and it's important to follow any guidelines provided by organizers to ensure the safety of the hatchlings.
Snorkeling and Marine Life
When planning your snorkeling adventure, consider visiting during the daylight hours for the best visibility. While the beach is named for its turtles, you might also spot colorful fish, small reef sharks (harmless), and other fascinating sea creatures. The shallow areas are particularly good for beginners, while more experienced snorkelers might venture slightly further out.
It's advisable to bring your own snorkeling gear for comfort and hygiene, though rentals are often available. Always be aware of your surroundings, including the currents and the proximity of boats. Respecting the marine environment by not touching corals or disturbing any wildlife is paramount to preserving this beautiful ecosystem for future visitors.

While the immediate beach area might have limited facilities, the town of Hikkaduwa is just a short walk away and provides a range of amenities. You'll find restaurants, cafes, and shops offering local Sri Lankan cuisine, fresh seafood, and international options. This makes it easy to grab a meal or refreshments after a day of exploring.
