What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Trincomalee Fish Market for its authentic atmosphere and the exceptional freshness of its seafood, making it a must-visit for culinary enthusiasts. While prices can be affected by external factors, the vibrant experience and quality of catch are consistently highlighted as major draws. It's best experienced in the early morning for the widest selection.
"This place is a solid choice for fresh seafood, especially if you have a kitchen where you're staying. If not, it's still worth a visit just to see the variety of fish they have.
I noticed prawns were selling for around 2200-2600 Rs/kg, calamari cuttlefish was about 1600 Rs, and most of the fish were around 1400-1600 Rs. There are also people who can clean your purchases for a fee of 100 Rs.
It's best to go early in the morning, between 6:30 and 8 am, to get the best selection."

"A great early morning out! A busy and interesting place to visit. We arrived at 6:30am, they were sorting and weighing all the different fish and shellfish. The fishermen were helpful with fish types, even though we weren’t buying. We went to a local cafe for a lovely and cheap breakfast and bumped into the fish market owner who was sweet. A wide variety of fish well displayed."

"There is a wide variety of fresh fish available here. The freshness and quality are excellent. The ideal time to buy fish here is in the morning. You lose your options, and prices rise slightly by the day, you can see prawns and crabs running for their lives on the floor in a futile attempt to escape the fisherman. That reflects how fresh the food is. Fishermen may also offer to sell you live prawns. You also can chop your fish within minutes for Rs. 50 per kilo from behind the market building. However, because of the ongoing fuel crisis in Sri Lanka, prices for kerosene, which is used as fuel in fishing boats, have risen. As a result of the effect, seafood prices have soared. Chicken may be a better choice if the pricing is your concern. 🙂"
