Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Galapatha Raja Maha Viharaya for its profound historical and spiritual significance, particularly highlighting the impressive reclining Buddha statue and ancient murals. The serene atmosphere and the opportunity for insightful tours with knowledgeable guides are frequently mentioned positives. Some note that while there's no strict entry fee, donations are appreciated, and photography permissions should be sought for certain areas.

"This is a place of great historical and spiritual significance. According to the rock inscription found here, it dates back to the 30th regnal year of King Parakramabahu I, placing it in the 12th century A.D. The site is officially recognized by the Ministry of National Heritage and is under the care of the Department of Archaeology (Puravidya Department).

The inscription mentions that the land belongs to the Buddhist monastic community. A notable feature of the site is the stupa, which is said to enshrine the sacred relics (dathu) of Arahant Maha Kashyapa, a revered monk known for his deep spiritual discipline (Duthanga practices). He is especially honored in Buddhism for bearing a resemblance to the Buddha in appearance.

This site is not only a valuable piece of history but also a merit-giving sacred space for Buddhists. Whether you come for religious reasons or simply seek a quiet and peaceful environment, this place offers a calm, serene atmosphere that is perfect for reflection and worship."

"Galagoda Shailatharama Temple History

The Galagoda Shailatharama Viharaya is a sacred place of worship.
It is believed that this temple, located in the calm village of Karandeniya, was established during the reign of King Parakramabahu VI of the Kotte Kingdom (early 15th century).
During this period, a noble monk who came from India resided at this location and propagated the teachings of the Buddha.
It is said that the temple was later expanded and protected by many kings and local leaders.

The most significant feature of the Galagoda Shailatharama Viharaya is the massive reclining Buddha statue built within the temple premises.
This Buddha statue, made out of brick and clay, measures about 35 meters (115 feet) in length and is considered one of the largest reclining Buddha statues in South Asia.
In addition to the main statue, there are several smaller statues of standing and seated Buddhas, as well as beautiful paintings depicting scenes from the life of the Buddha and Jataka stories.

The temple has a rich collection of ancient murals and wood carvings that display the exceptional craftsmanship of the past.
The paintings mainly illustrate religious stories and teachings aimed at guiding devotees along the path of Dhamma.
It is believed that these works of art were created by artists belonging to the Kandyan period (17th–19th centuries).

Despite various threats over the centuries—including colonial invasions and natural disasters—the monks and devotees of the region have continuously worked to protect and preserve the temple.
They have maintained the temple’s structure, its valuable paintings, and the reclining Buddha statue with great devotion.

Today, the Galagoda Shailatharama Temple stands as a beacon of Buddhist faith and culture, attracting pilgrims and visitors from across Sri Lanka and abroad.
Devotees who visit the temple are reminded of the deep historical and religious significance of the site and are encouraged to follow the noble teachings of the Buddha towards the attainment of Nibbana.

May all who visit here be blessed with peace, happiness, and spiritual progress.

"Beautiful old temple in quiet peaceful area. Literally the only visitors, shown round by an excellent guide who was very knowledgeable. Part of the temple is over 2,000 years old and some of the art is 300 years old. Joined by the elderly senior Monk who although we were originally asked not to take photos of the wall paintings in the part of the temple overseen by the government archeological department he gave us his personal permission. Extremely impressed and grateful to have had such a wonderful experience.
We appreciated the very good guide and he was very happy with our donation ( yes he lets you know he would like a tip at the end of the tour) Also a donation to the Temple which was also very appropriate."
