The Galagoda Shailatharama Viharaya is a sacred place of worship.
It is believed that this temple, located in the calm village of Karandeniya, was established during the reign of King Parakramabahu VI of the Kotte Kingdom (early 15th century).
During this period, a noble monk who came from India resided at this location and propagated the teachings of the Buddha.
It is said that the temple was later expanded and protected by many kings and local leaders.
The most significant feature of the Galagoda Shailatharama Viharaya is the massive reclining Buddha statue built within the temple premises.
This Buddha statue, made out of brick and clay, measures about 35 meters (115 feet) in length and is considered one of the largest reclining Buddha statues in South Asia.

"Beautiful old temple in quiet peaceful area. Literally the only visitors, shown round by an excellent guide who was very knowledgeable. Part of the temple is over 2,000 years old and some of the art is 300 years old. Joined by the elderly senior Monk who although we were originally asked not to take photos of the wall paintings in the part of the temple overseen by the government archeological department he gave us his personal permission. Extremely impressed and grateful to have had such a wonderful experience.
