Accessing Austfonna: Expedition Crucial

Austfonna is not a destination you can simply drive to. Access is primarily via expedition cruises, often departing from Longyearbyen in Svalbard. Booking well in advance is essential, as these trips are limited and highly sought after. Consider the season for optimal viewing and wildlife encounters.

Environmental Sensitivity & Climate Change

Witnessing Austfonna means confronting the realities of climate change. The glacier is rapidly melting, with some parts losing significant ice daily. Be prepared for a stark reminder of environmental shifts and pack accordingly for unpredictable Arctic weather.

Reviews Summary

Visitors are awestruck by the immense scale and raw beauty of Austfonna, Europe's largest ice cap. The opportunity to witness calving glaciers and spot Arctic wildlife like walruses is a major highlight. However, the remote nature and the stark reality of climate change's impact are also frequently noted.

"Austonna covers the eastern part of Nordaustlandet, an island located in the northeast of Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean. Covering an area of 8,492 km², it is the largest ice sheet in Europe before Vatnajökull in Iceland and the seventh largest in the world. Its volume is 1,900 km², its maximum thickness is 560 meters, and its elevation is 700 meters.
Its base is located largely below sea level. This ice shelf, interrupted only by rare rocky outcrops, is 180 kilometers long. Two ice domes at its center, the Serdømen (South Dome) and the Norddomen (North Dome), are the highest and culminating points of the glacier and Nordauslandet, at 700 meters above sea level. Its surface is marked by crevasses, and during the summer meltwater flows across its surface in the form of crevasses forming waterfalls that reach the glacial front. The largest icebergs on Svalbard are produced by the calving of the glacier."
