What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Colesbukta offers a fascinating glimpse into Svalbard's Soviet past, with its abandoned village providing a unique, albeit weathered, historical experience. Visitors are captivated by the remote Arctic setting and the potential for wildlife sightings during the boat journey. However, access can be tide-dependent, and many buildings are inaccessible, which may limit exploration for some.
"If you ever want to feel like you’re at the edge of the world, come to Colesbukta (Cole’s Bay), Svalbard! This is a small abandoned village on the island of Spitsbergen at the southern edge of Isfjorden about halfway between Longyearbyen and Barentsburg. If you’ve hired a boat driver to take you between Longyearbyen, Barentsburg, or Isfjord Radio Station, be sure to have them stop here! If the tide is right, you can take a zodiac boat right to shore and then explore the abandoned buildings.
This settlement was founded in 1912 and was a former Soviet company town - it was actually connected to the town of Grumant (just east) via a railway through the mountain, and was abandoned in 1965. Supposedly one of the buildings is a self-guided museum (though we didn’t go inside any), but BE CAREFUL! Polar bears wander this area, so make sure you’re protected. You never know who you might run into! 🐻❄️"
