What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find Johannisborg Castle Ruins to be a peaceful historical site, with the renovated gatehouse being the main point of interest. However, many note that there is little to see beyond the gatehouse, which is inaccessible due to an electric fence, and the information sign is damaged.
"Even though the place is long gone and only one gate stands witness from what was once an amazing fortification, it is a peaceful place to visit and enjoy the quietness of Norrköping. The history of this place is magnificent so not to spoil someone's exploration if you're a history buff and want to learn something that would impress the Swedish, come here, take some photos and try to learn something more about this alluring place. Overall, definitely recommending it to everyone that wants to take a closer peak at some historic remnants."

"Don’t go here, almost nothing to see. This place has an important and interesting history but it is not taken care of. The only thing left is the renovated (1934) gate house and that is behind an electric fence... so you cannot access it... behind the fence there is also an info sign. If you bypass the fence you will see that the sign is burned and unreadable..."

"A small piece of a once large castle/fortress. It's an interesting site for a short visit. Unfortunately the gatehouse and its information sign are both located inside a pen with no apparent entrance (the building can still be viewed from outside, though). Additionally, the sign seems to have been burnt at some point and is this near illegible."

The History of Johannisborg Castle
Today, the most prominent remaining feature is the renovated gatehouse, distinguished by its green copper spire. This structure stands as a solitary witness to the castle's former glory. Unfortunately, the historical context is somewhat diminished for visitors as the on-site information sign detailing the castle's history has been damaged by fire and is now illegible.
Despite the limited visible remains and accessibility issues, the site offers a peaceful atmosphere for reflection. For history enthusiasts, researching the castle's past before visiting can greatly enhance the experience, allowing them to appreciate the significance of the few remnants left behind.
Visiting the Gatehouse: Access and Viewing
Visitors can still view the gatehouse from outside the fence. While this allows for appreciation of its architecture, it limits a closer inspection or interaction with the building. The fence is in place to protect the historical structure, but it does create a barrier for those hoping for a more immersive experience.
Adjacent to the gatehouse, there was an information sign intended to provide historical context. Regrettably, this sign has been damaged by fire and is now nearly impossible to read. This means that visitors seeking to learn about the castle's history on-site will find this resource unavailable, underscoring the importance of prior research.
