Climbed Mount Eiger (3970) via Mittellegi route. Rather technical and exposed alpine climb on the Eiger’s northeast ridge, starting with a train to the Eismeer station, a glacier crossing to the Mittellegi Hut, followed by a long, narrow, and difficult ridge climb to the summit, and a descent via the South Ridge and Jungfraujoch. I’m squealing with joy! 😝

Eiger 51k - How to pace myself?

Hi all, I'm not a trailrunner but I will be doing the eiger 51k in a month... My experience is just about only road running up to the marathon (and some minor trail) so I'm trying to figure out how I can pace myself to set some sort of goal while not going all out or blowing…

Wear sturdy hiking boots

Trails can be rocky and uneven. Good grip is essential. :athletic_shoe:

What route up the Eiger would you recommend for intermediate alpinists?

The north face is out of the question but I'm reading up on the West Flank vs Mittellegi Ridge. I'd love to hear your opinions on which route would be best in mid / late spring. Also, would love to hear any of your Eiger stories in the comments!

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Eiger's breathtaking alpine scenery and the thrill of experiencing its iconic North Face, whether through challenging climbs or scenic hikes. The accessibility via modern transport like the Eiger Express enhances the experience, though some note limitations in on-mountain amenities and the unpredictability of weather.

"Breathtaking views of the Eiger and surrounding Alps from Grindelwald. Perfect for hiking, photography, and enjoying nature. The village itself is charming with cozy cafés and shops. A must-visit for mountain lovers and outdoor enthusiasts."

"You transfer Eiger Express to train here. The view is stunning outside the station, also a starting point to hiking to Klein scheidegg."

Vivianne Lin

"Switzerland visit 🇨🇭 was a dream come true, our first Stop was Luzern, a well-preserved old town, with medieval architecture and the Lake Luzern a cobalt blue lake surrounded by snow-capped Alps. We stayed at a beautiful Inn called Swiss Dewa which was just opposite the Lake Luzern and near the Railway station. The view of the lake was just marvelous.

We had planned a trip to Grindelwald a Glacier village at the Switzerland’s Bernese Alps, which is a popular gateway for the Jungfrau Region situated at the Peak of Europe, with skiing in winter and hiking in summer. It's also a base for mountain-climbing ascents up the iconic north face of Eiger Mountain. We had a choice on reaching the Grindelwald station to either stay back and sight see the Grindelwald village or go up to the Juangfraujoch the Peak of Europe. We took a train to the Juangfrau and from there by gondola to the Juangfraujoch the Peak of Europe marveling at the beautiful panoramic view of the Swiss Alps with the scattered of snow clad roofs and holiday makers out in the sun skiing or sledgeing in the snow. The 2nd day we decided to stop at the Grindelwald village for Sightseeing as this place offers a very wide variety of activities like a 3 D experience of Bunjee jumping wch was a thrill a minute experience of experiencing gliding across the Swiss Alps while actually only sitting on a seat with a 3 D glasses. We also trekked to the Grindelwald first on an iron bridge to the see and take pictures of the surrounding peaks and marvel at the panoramic views and also see the world famous Toblerone mountain, which was just Epic.

There was a stop in between traveling by bus to Grindelwald , a beautiful valley called Interlaken is known as the adventure capital of Switzerland. Activities like bungee jumping, canyoning, and skydiving attract thrill-seekers from all over the world."

🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry

You don't need a ticket to see the Eiger from afar, but access to specific viewpoints, cable cars (like the Eiger Express), and mountain railways requires tickets. Booking online in advance is recommended. 🎟️

The Eiger itself is always accessible for climbers. However, the Eiger Express gondola and mountain railways operate on specific schedules, typically from early morning to late afternoon. Check their official websites for current times. :clock1:

Yes, depending on your chosen route, you might need tickets for the Eiger Express, Jungfrau Railway, or other local transport. Consider a Swiss Travel Pass for potential savings if you're exploring more of Switzerland. :moneybag:

The Eiger is part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage site, but there isn't a specific 'entrance fee' for the mountain itself. Access to trails and transport systems will incur costs. :mountain_snow:

While possible, buying tickets for popular transport like the Eiger Express on the day can lead to long wait times, especially during peak tourist seasons. It's best to book ahead online. 💻

🎫 🥾 Onsite Experience

Popular options include the Eiger Trail (moderate, 2-3 hrs) for close-up North Face views, the Panorama Trail (easy, 1.5-2 hrs) from Kleine Scheidegg for stunning vistas, and the North Face Trail (moderate, 3-4 hrs). The Jungfrau Eiger Walk is a short, easy option. :hiking_boot:

Absolutely. The Eiger's North Face is world-renowned for its challenging climbing routes, attracting experienced mountaineers. The Mittellegi route is a technical and exposed alpine climb. 🧗

🍽️ 🍽️ Food & Dining

Restaurants and mountain huts are available at key stations like Eigergletscher and Kleine Scheidegg, offering traditional Swiss cuisine. Grindelwald also has numerous dining options. 🍴

Food options are scarce directly on the trails. It's best to pack snacks and water, or plan to eat at the mountain restaurants located at the start/end points of popular hikes. :apple:

Unfortunately, boiling water for tea at high altitudes like the Eiger summit is difficult due to lower atmospheric pressure affecting the boiling point. Pack a thermos if you want hot drinks. 🍵

Expect hearty Swiss fare like Rösti, fondue, sausages, and local pastries. Many offer stunning views to accompany your meal. :cheese_wedge:

While traditional Swiss cuisine can be meat-heavy, many restaurants are increasingly offering vegetarian options. Vegan choices might be more limited, so it's wise to inquire ahead or pack your own food. :leafy_green:

📸 📸 Photography

Kleine Scheidegg offers iconic panoramic shots. The Eiger Trail provides dramatic close-ups of the North Face. Grindelwald village also offers charming foregrounds with the Eiger in the background. :camerawithflash:

Sunrise and sunset can offer dramatic lighting, but midday can also be stunning with clear blue skies. Early mornings often have fewer clouds and softer light. :sunriseovermountains:

A wide-angle lens is great for capturing the vast landscapes, while a telephoto lens can help isolate details on the Eiger's imposing face or distant peaks. 📷

Cloudy days can be disappointing for grand vistas, but they can create moody, dramatic shots of the Eiger's North Face. Focus on texture and atmosphere. ☁️

While specific Eiger photography tours might be rare, local guides in the Jungfrau region can often tailor excursions to include prime photography locations. :guide_dog:
