This is the Market Gate of Miletus, found in the Pergamon Museum. Built in the 2nd Century CE, destroyed during an earthquake, rediscovered in the 1900s and reconstructed here in the museum. It always blows my mind how big the gate is. Like everything in the Pergamon, it's not without controversy and there are a lot of debates over this museum. It's namesake Pergamon temple has been closed since ...

Reviews Summary

Visitors highly recommend starting at the Miletus Museum for context before exploring the vast ancient city ruins. The amphitheater is a standout feature, and the museum's artifacts are praised. Some note minor issues with restroom facilities and the heat during peak times.

"Really recommend visiting the small museum first as it explains the whole context, history and layout of the city before you walk it, i was fascinated by how, despite being miles inland now, it had been a harbour city before the large inlet slowly silted up through Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Turkish periods.

Start at the huge and well preserved amphitheatre and walk a loop around and ancient city and go back in time using the information boards all over the site. The images of how each building once looked, help bring it to life."

Paul

"If you have seen Ephesus then this is a great alternative to visit. Besides Ancient Miletus this museum that is on site tells the rest of the story. Very open inside for easy accessibility with modern bathrooms. The museum gives the site history and displays the finer artifacts they have found. Very good outside courtyard with highly detailed sculptures and sarcophagi. Happy exploring!"

Mike Stoehr

"The staffs exhibition in the museum is consisted of antiques from Priene, Miletus and Didyma. The main focus is early Hellenistic era.
(Unfortunately, I'm. more interested in late Hellenistic and early Roman era). But it is still a good place to visit ."
