What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Africa House is celebrated for its unparalleled ocean views and historic ambiance, particularly the iconic sunset vistas from its terrace. While many appreciate the colonial charm and decent food, some guests have noted dated rooms, maintenance issues, and higher-than-average prices for the region. The location is consistently praised, making it a popular stop for tourists seeking a memorable Zanzibar experience.
"Went for a meal with a large group. Has a nice view of the sea (although is very dark on the terrace). It is also on the expensive side for Stone Town but I think that's because it's aimed at tourists. Food is okay, so of you're looking for somewhere that does something for everyone then it does the job."

"First visited in 2008. Return visit in 2023. The location is still superb. The “Sunset Bar” still has a timeless character to it with tourists still seeking the amazing views of the setting sun (weather permitting of course). The rooms are dated and upkeep is needed. Our room facing west leaked quite badly in the heavy rains during our 3 day/2 night stay. Regrettably, the top level terrace we sat on in 2008 has been closed now for a number of years probably due to needed upkeep and is now just an area for storage of chairs and tables. The main bar terrace still gathers and serves the crowds. Price is middle of the pack, but some of the price is for the location and not necessarily reflecting of the amenities. Overall a great spot for a few days and well worth it for the sunset views."

"The location is good, right by the sea and once the building work opposite has been completed the view will be very nice. However sadly that’s where the positives end. There is a bar or club very nearby which played really loud music until about 2am, affecting the quality of sleep.
The toilet was leaking water all over the floor. This was clearly not a new issue due to the water stains all over the floor, it has been leaking for some time.
The plaster on the walls and ceiling is flaking and crumbling. Everything was covered in flakes of dust, including the cups you’re given for tea (but not provided with a kettle), and the floor was filthy.
The bathroom is in a state of disrepair, it was leaking and mouldy and stank of drains. The shower was simply a mess. The water from the taps and shower came out salty.
The bedsheets were stained and the duvet was just on the bed without a duvet cover or sheet covering it. The towels were extremely old and threadbare and also stained.
The breakfast wasn’t a buffet, we were offered omelette, pancakes, or French toast, and fruit. It was ok. However the coffee was served in filthy cups and saucers and had things floating in it."
