What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Ranong Pier is a functional and generally well-organized gateway to Koh Phayam and Koh Chang. Visitors appreciate the availability of food and parking, though the speedboat ride is notably loud. Low tide can sometimes complicate the arrival process.
"Nice pier. While there is a bit of a fishy smell I wouldn't say it's as horrible as stated before. I'm here at midday where the heat can make it worse but the smell is fine. There's a 5THB port fee which helps with improving the pier. Most hotels have a number for a taxi + speedboat so we did that but there are also some stalls to book on the same day. Not busy at this time on a Monday too. If you're early, there are a couple of shops around so you can browse. Including a cannabis shop next door, for those inclined. Apparently a massive bus turns up here but not sure how to get it. They seemingly have nice toilets but I didn't try."

"Speed boat leaves to Ranong and arrives here IF the tide permits. At low tide, you'll be dropped off at the main pier, which is a disaster area. Here's a fee of 5THB if you want to use the toilet, not for going on the pier. Speed boat personell asks you to wait a bit to the side before boarding and they'll call on you, which then is ignored by some tourists, and you're at the back of the queue, if you're interested in picking a seating side of the boat. Regardless of where you sit on the speed boat, BRING EARPLUGS, as it's stupid loud, especially in the back."

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
While the pier itself has amenities like toilets and seating, the potential for a less-than-ideal drop-off at low tide means having a plan for getting to your accommodation with little ones. The food options at the pier offer a chance for a good meal before or after the boat trip, which can be a lifesaver with hungry kids. Consider booking transport in advance or arriving early to minimize stress and ensure a smoother start to your family island adventure.
💰 Budget Travelers
Be mindful of the 5 THB pier fee for facilities. While parking your car incurs a daily fee (around 100 THB), it might be more economical than other mainland parking options. The food at the pier restaurants is noted for being delicious and a good value, providing a satisfying meal without breaking the bank before you reach the islands. Planning your travel during the low season might also result in lower prices for transport and accommodation on the islands themselves, as suggested by one traveler who enjoyed a deserted island feel.

Navigating the Speedboat Experience
Seating can be a consideration. While the crew may ask passengers to wait to the side before boarding, some tourists disregard this, leading to a scramble for seats. Being aware of the boarding process and being ready when called can help you secure a preferred spot. The trip itself is relatively short, usually around 30-40 minutes, making it a quick transition to island life.
Important Note: The speedboat's ability to dock directly at the main pier is tide-dependent. At low tide, you might be transferred to a different, less convenient location. This is a crucial detail to be aware of when planning your arrival and onward travel on the island.
Ranong Pier: More Than Just a Transit Point
The pier itself is generally well-maintained and organized, with clean toilets available for a small fee of 5 THB. There are ample seating areas for passengers to relax before their journey. For those traveling by car, parking facilities are available for a daily fee of approximately 100 THB. Some travelers have noted the presence of shops, including a cannabis shop, adding a unique element to the pier's offerings.
Despite its functional role, the pier can experience a noticeable fishy smell, particularly during warmer parts of the day. However, many reviewers find this manageable and not as severe as sometimes described. The overall atmosphere is one of transit and anticipation, a bustling gateway to the more serene island destinations.
