"Nice quiet island to visit with a motorbike for the day or the perfect getaway for a relaxing holiday. Roads are mostly good and there are beautiful looooong empty white sandy beaches, forested areas and even some small "mountains" (hills) on the North East side of the island. "Koh Kho Khao is small 16 km long island situated approximately 1 km off the mainland 20 minutes north of the popular seaside resort community of Khao Lak and only 1 hour and 30 minutes from Phuket international airport.
The island is lined with pristine beaches of classic beauty that are so good it is often referred to as the best kept secret in Khao Lak. Just a ten minute boat ride from the Takua Pa area of Phang Nga province, Kho Kho Khao doesn’t look very different from the mainland. However, for those seeking a dream tropical destination away from the crowded beaches of Khao Lak or Phuket, Kho Khao is the place.
The island’s long golden beaches are the main draw, and aesthetically these are similar to the beaches of the Khao Lak without all the people. The island still feels like something of a secret place, even with 8 full service resorts and a residential / vacation home community at present. Various local restaurants, numerous mini-marts and of course beach side restaurants and beautiful chill out places (especially in the north of the island) are very popular.
Each year tourists flock here for day trips mostly to travel the highway from the pier to the northern tip. There is little to no traffic here and the highway is beautifully paved making for a pleasant ride. The northern tip of the island features two main hang outs for day travelers to the island Sunset Beach and Hula beach which are at the very end of the highway as it finishes at the beach. There are plenty of places to buy snacks, beverages, food and gasoline along the way so fear not.
The island has been especially popular with Scandinavians and Germans (many who come every year as their holiday destination of choice) however, Koh Koh Khao is increasing in popularity and growing significantly on the tourism radar. If you are so inclined stop by and check out (or google) Sunee restaurant which is a small family run place with in my opinion some of the best Thai food at the best prices on the island. Yes has Ice cold Beer!"
