Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project for its crucial conservation work and educational value. Many appreciate that the project prioritizes the gibbons' welfare and rehabilitation over tourist interaction. Some note that direct contact is limited, which is essential for the animals' recovery.

"This tour excelled our expectations. You won’t get close to the gibbons as it’s the centres mission to minimise contact with humans to hopefully return the gibbons to the wild in the future. The gibbons that we observed were the ones that are furthest from being ready for release. We learnt so many wonderful facts about the exhausting process of retraining these beautiful animals to not rely on humans. We made food for them and used trollies to feed and then observe them.
We skipped the walk to the waterfall after as 2 giants trees collapsed while we were there"

Kerry Scar

"We had an amazing time here.
Many thanks to our lovely volunteer guide (sorry we can't recall your name) who explained the rehabilitation process, about some of those which can't be rehabilitated, the history of the project and many other absorbing details.
After the visit we then hiked up the adjacent river to the nearby Bang Pae waterfall for a cooling dip!"

Neil Johnson

"An amazing place that patiently rehabilitates Gibbons so they can be released into the wild and slowly build up a wild population. The process takes many years, and they put much care into it. The story of how they do it is amazing and you can learn all about it by taking their one hour learning session.

I booked online, showed up and was very impressed by the whole thing. I learned a lot.

Bonus is there is an amazing restaurant right near it for afterwards!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Mission of the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project

The Gibbon Rehabilitation Project (GRP) in Phuket is dedicated to rescuing gibbons that have been exploited in the tourism industry, often subjected to abuse and forced performances. Their primary goal is to rehabilitate these animals, providing them with the care and environment necessary to eventually be released back into their natural habitat. This involves extensive veterinary care, behavioral enrichment, and careful monitoring to ensure their successful reintegration into the wild. Instagram+1

The project operates on donations and visitor income, as it does not receive government subsidies. This makes every visit and contribution incredibly important to their ongoing efforts. Visitors are educated about the plight of gibbons and the importance of ethical tourism practices. While direct interaction is limited to protect the gibbons' rehabilitation process, the educational aspect is profound, offering a unique insight into conservation work. Reddit+1

Witnessing the dedication of the GRP staff and understanding the challenges these animals face is a powerful experience. It serves as a stark reminder of the impact of irresponsible tourism and highlights the vital role such rehabilitation centers play in protecting endangered species. Instagram

Planning Your Visit: What to Expect

When planning a trip to the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project Phuket, it's important to manage expectations. Unlike some animal encounters, the GRP prioritizes the gibbons' welfare, meaning direct handling or close-up interactions are not part of the experience. Instead, visitors can expect an informative tour that details the gibbons' rescue stories, their recovery process, and the challenges they face in the wild. Reddit

Many visitors recommend booking your visit in advance, especially if you have a limited time in Phuket. This ensures you secure a spot and can plan your day effectively. Consider visiting in the morning when the gibbons are typically more active. Comfortable walking shoes are essential, as the project is located within a natural sanctuary and may involve walking on trails. Instagram

Combining your visit with other nearby attractions, such as the Bang Pae Waterfall or other natural trekking areas within the Khao Phra Thaeo Wildlife Sanctuary, can make for a fuller day of exploration. Remember that your entry fee or donation is a direct contribution to the survival and rehabilitation of these magnificent creatures. Instagram+1
