What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Bir Barouta offers a unique glimpse into Kairouan's history with its ancient camel-powered well and traditional cafe. Visitors appreciate the cultural experience and the kindness of the staff, though concerns about animal welfare are frequently raised.
"Visiting Bir Barrouta was such an interesting experience — honestly the first time in my life seeing something like this.
The man working there was incredibly kind and helpful. He explained everything to us with so much patience, and I really appreciated that they don’t ask for money. You can give whatever you want, and you can even drink the water from the well.
My only concern was the camel. Even though the man explained that they rotate the animals — one works one day, and another the next — and that it’s a tradition that has been followed for a long time, I still felt bad for them.
Overall, it’s definitely worth visiting for the cultural experience, but I hope the animals are always treated gently."

"This is probably one of the most unique places to visit in Kairouan. There is a well-known and a very old mechanism which works with a camel turning it to bring the water up. This mechanism has been in place for many years. Religious superstition believes that the well in connected to the Zamzam well in Mecca, hence locals consider the place rather sacred and keep the mechanism in place, in spite of irs being unnecessary for the current times. It is a very good experience to see the camel in action. Make sure you are seated when the camel is turning around."
