What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Recent visitors report significant changes to the Icmeler Canal Walk, with the canyon often inaccessible due to dam construction. While some can access the back of the dam for unique views, the terrain is steep and slippery, and the canyon itself may be dried up or difficult to navigate.
"There’s no canyon anymore. If you follow Google Maps from İçmeler, you’ll end up at a government facility that blocks access to the nature reserve. Maybe the canyon has dried up, maybe not, but it’s currently impossible to enter from the city side."
Anastasiia Ozdemir
"As mentioned in the previous post, there is no access to the canyon as there is now a dam been built to prevent flooding in the town. However, during the summer ( May onwards), you can access the back of the dam to see the canyon. Not much to see apart from a couple of pools of water, dragonflies and the occasional frogs but some nice natural stone formations and of course the dams themselves if your into modern aqua scapes. Beware of the climb up and down the side of the dam as it's pretty steep and easy to slip."

"I was really looking forward to to coming here. After walking a couple of miles from the hotel the canyon itself is now closed off with what I think it concrete works for a new canal that’s being built. Myself and my partner climbed over and got to what is left of the canyon itself. You can get down and up bits but you would need some rope to abseil down if you wanted to explore it further than the first pool."

The Changing Landscape of Icmeler Canal Walk
Despite these challenges, some travelers have managed to access the area behind the dam, particularly from May onwards. This alternative route offers a different perspective, showcasing modern aqua scapes and natural stone formations. However, it's crucial to be aware that the climb up and down the dam's sides is steep and can be very slippery, posing a risk of slips and falls.
Past reviews also mention that ladders and bridges within the canyon have been damaged, making it difficult for amateurs to explore further. This has led to disappointment for those expecting the natural beauty previously documented. While the area might still offer a short adventure, it's advisable to manage expectations and prioritize safety if attempting to explore.
Navigating Access and Safety
For those determined to see the area, accessing the back of the dam from May onwards has been a viable, albeit challenging, option. This route requires a considerable climb, and the surfaces are known to be steep and easy to slip on. Therefore, wearing appropriate footwear with good grip is not just recommended, but essential for a safe experience.
Furthermore, the condition of the canyon itself has deteriorated, with reports of damaged infrastructure like ladders and bridges. This makes further exploration beyond the initial pools difficult for casual visitors. If you plan to venture into areas requiring more than just walking, consider the risks and whether you have the necessary equipment or expertise.
