➕❤️🙏 In 1760, Batoni created the Sacred Heart of Jesus painting, placed in this chapel in the Jesuit Church of the Gesù in Rome. This became the official image for the Sacred Heart devotion. The painting was inspired by Jesus’ apparition to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-1690) in 1673. During prayer, she saw Jesus’ Sacred Heart, which she described as “a throne of flames, more resplendent than...

"Beautiful church in the city center. However, the gates were closed, so couldn’t check out how it is on the inside."

"It's is beautiful church in city, however I didn't went inside, but the view of church is so beautiful,The beginning of this Cathedral's history dates back to 1870s when the number of Jesuits in Chernivtsi started gaining momentum. In 1875 Zygmunt Szczęsny Feliński, the Arbishop, officially referred to the Jesuit Community asking to promote Jesuit Fathers in the city.

In 1885 Father Symon Tychowsky was appointed as the main Jesuit priest in Bukovyna. First, worships were conducted in a chapel, however, as the number of followers was growing, the need for the dedicated cathedral became urgent.

After the municipality granted the land plot relevant for the construction project, Prof. Josef Leitzner from Chernivtsi High Industrial School developed the design. Initially the required amount was estimated as 160 thousand crowns but the final sum, including the purchasing and installing of sculptures, bells, big organ and the priest's residence built on the rear side totalled 208 thousand crowns.

The completed Cathedral was consecrated on June 7, 1891. On June 21, 1895 the structure was given its Jesus Heart name.

When Bukovyna became Romanian after the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Cathedral continued its service and even managed doing that after the area became part of Soviet Ukraine in 1940-1941. During the World War II its priests saved a number of Jews who had to formally change their creed to avoid deportation to Ghetto by Nazis.

After the Soviet power returned in 1944, the Cathedral continued to function as a Jesuit sanctuary for one year. In 1945, for unclear reasons it was given to the orthodox community but one year later its religious function discontinued at all. For nearly half a century it was used as the Oblast Archive Office. In 1996 the local community initiated its return to the Jesuit followers and in 2010 it was finally returned to the community. Currently the Cathedral is in the process of renovation the cost of which is estimated as a minimum of €4 million and will thus last for a significant period of time."

"The only church building in the city probably in the gothic style. I was pleasantly surprised to see it as I’m not a big fan of Eastern Orthodox architecture. This is good example of western culture."

A Glimpse into History

The history of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church Jesuit is rich and complex. Its origins trace back to the 1870s when Jesuit presence in Chernivtsi grew. By 1885, Father Symon Tychowsky was appointed, and initial worships were held in a chapel. The need for a dedicated cathedral became apparent as the congregation expanded. After securing a land plot, Professor Josef Leitzner designed the structure, with the final cost, including furnishings and a priest's residence, reaching 208 thousand crowns. The completed Cathedral was consecrated on June 7, 1891, and officially named the Jesus Heart Cathedral on June 21, 1895. Reddit

During the period when Bukovyna became Romanian and later part of Soviet Ukraine, the Cathedral continued its service. Notably, during World War II, its priests sheltered Jews by having them formally change their creed to evade Nazi persecution. However, after the Soviet power returned in 1944, the Cathedral served as a Jesuit sanctuary for only a year. In 1945, it was transferred to the Orthodox community, and by 1946, its religious function ceased entirely. For nearly half a century, it was repurposed as the Oblast Archive Office. Reddit

In 1996, a community initiative led to its return to the Jesuit followers, a process finalized in 2010. Currently, the Cathedral is undergoing extensive renovation, estimated to cost at least €4 million, a project that is expected to take a significant amount of time. This ongoing restoration is a testament to its enduring importance and the community's dedication to preserving its heritage. Reddit

Architectural Significance

The Sacred Heart of Jesus Church Jesuit stands out architecturally, particularly for its Gothic style. This design is noted as a good example of Western culture and is a pleasant surprise for those who may not be as fond of Eastern Orthodox architecture. The building's exterior showcases intricate details and a grandeur that is impressive even from the outside. Reddit

While specific interior details are less documented due to limited access, the Gothic influence suggests features like pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and potentially flying buttresses, common in this architectural period. The church's construction involved significant investment, including the acquisition and installation of sculptures, a large organ, and bells, all contributing to its aesthetic and acoustic qualities. The overall impression is one of historical depth and artistic merit, making it a notable landmark. Reddit
