The spiritual atmosphere and powerful priests are also frequently highlighted as positive aspects.
"Church of the Savior is the oldest architectural monument of national importance in Poltava. Also it is the first successful project of the so-called “museuification” of the house of worship – the wooden churn was covered by a stone case. Having entered the Church of the Savior in Poltava you are immediately run into a kind of corridor of time and appears in ХVІІІ and ХІХ centuries!
The Church built from oak beams begat to destroy. In 1837 Alexander ІІ visited Poltava and saw the old roof of the Church and its walls covered with moss. After that the emperor heritor initiated opening of charitable subscription in order to preserve the Church by raising the finances for construction of stone case over the wooden Church. This initiative allowed to get 25 000 Rubles in silver. In 1845 the architect A. Ton implemented the preservation project. Since that time and till present the wooden Church is covered with its stone copy (height – 13.5 m, length – 21 m). Between the Church and its stone copy there is a space of 50 cm – 1 meter. The iconostasis of the beginning of ХVІІІ century also was renewed at that time. Two-level stone bell tower built in 1847 was located near the Church. In 30s of ХХ century this bell tower was also demounted like a stone fence around the Church. New bell tower was built in 2005 on the foundation of the old one. The new tower has three bells molded of red copper and stannum alloy. Two bells have the weight of 45 kg each and one – 75 kg."

"Greetings! Maybe someone can help, I want to baptize a child here, but I can't find a current contact number. We are from Kharkiv ourselves and therefore we can't come to ask. I'm afraid to be 10 minutes late and miss the Priest."

"This church is unique in that it is like a nesting doll: a stone case was built over a wooden church. That is, one church inside another. According to legend, after the Battle of Poltava, a prayer service was held here, at which Peter I was present, and the fallen soldiers were buried in the square near the church. The church is small, but beautiful."

The Unique 'Nesting Doll' Architecture
The initiative to encase the church in stone was spurred by a visit from Tsar Alexander II's heir in 1837, who was concerned about the church's deteriorating condition. Funds were raised through a charitable subscription, enabling architect A. Ton to design and execute the preservation project. This method ensured the survival of the ancient wooden church, making it a rare and significant example of historical conservation.
Beyond the primary structure, the church also features a bell tower. The original was dismantled in the 1930s, but a new one was erected in 2005 on the original foundation. This modern tower houses three bells made from a copper and stannum alloy, adding another layer to the church's evolving history and soundscape.
Historical Context and Legends
The church's iconostasis is also a significant artifact, dating back to the early 18th century. Its restoration during the 1845 stone casing project ensured that this beautiful piece of religious art, contemporary with the original wooden church, would be preserved for future generations. The church's longevity and its connection to such significant historical events make it a vital cultural monument in Poltava.
