Reviews Summary

Visitors are captivated by the Arts Tower's iconic brutalist architecture and the thrilling experience of riding the world's largest paternoster lift. The panoramic city views from the upper floors are a major highlight, offering a unique perspective of Sheffield. While some find the building's aesthetic and the lift's open nature intimidating, most agree it's a memorable and worthwhile visit.

"Just watched a video about Sheffield landmarks that are missed and I couldn't think of any but thought the Arts Towers should be demolished. Went to Sheff Uni in the mid 90s and had some lectures in here. The lift was open-ended and dangerous and antequated and the whole thing is just depressing. Depressing to be in and depressing to look up at. Knock it down, like they did with Sorby Hall."

"I just went there to try the lift. Recommended to try the unique experience. Stepping on the moving lift feels like getting off a car that's still moving. Also, I went over the top and I am still alive."

Ondra V

"A magnificent architectural force that rises high in the Sheffield skyline and hides more spatial curiosities within."

The Iconic Paternoster Lift

The Arts Tower is home to the world's largest paternoster lift, a truly unique and somewhat thrilling mode of transport. Unlike conventional elevators, paternoster lifts consist of a continuous loop of open-doored cabins that move up and down. Riders hop on and off as the cabins pass their desired floor. This system, while efficient, requires a certain level of agility and awareness. Many visitors describe the experience as exhilarating, with some even admitting to feeling a bit scared but ultimately alive after their ride. TikTokInstagram+2

It's important to note that this type of lift is rare, with only a few remaining in the UK. The open-doored nature means you can see the shaft and other cabins, adding to the spectacle. When riding, be sure to step on and off promptly and mind your head, as the cabins don't stop. It's an experience that perfectly encapsulates the building's innovative and slightly daring architectural spirit. TikTokInstagram
