What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Cleveland Lakes Nature Reserve is often praised as a hidden gem with lovely walks and abundant birdlife, particularly from its viewing hides. However, some visitors have found certain paths overgrown and muddy, with a lack of amenities like sufficient bins and benches, leading to disappointment for some. The parking fee is noted, and accessibility can be an issue on less maintained trails.
"Hidden gem. Lovely walk. Lots of nature including a bird watching hut. Some very creative seating areas. 24hr parking only £5. Tho if you are looking to stay the night there is a barrier. So only small campers will be able to access it."

"A bit disappointing as the main path was closed. Very over grown banks and no benches to sit on . Not enough dog dirt bins either for people to dispose of the waste so people.are leaving it hung in trees in the bags. Had to pay for parking which was a waste of money as we didn't stay long. I understand it's a nature reserve but even the hide was untidy and all overgrown. This clearly isn't used anymore but if this was tidied up I'm sure more people would use it."

"Only stopped by the one viewing spot briefly, but I got to see a Marsh Harrier and a bunch of Herons. Really nice little spot on a sunny day, and after talking to one of the more experienced bird enthusiasts there, they definitely sung it's praises as having lots to see. Give it a stop by!
Mind that parking did seem to be at a bit of a premium. I didn't have any trouble, but it only took a handful of people to suddenly get crowded."

Wildlife Watching at Cleveland Lakes
Beyond birds, the reserve's ecosystem supports other forms of wildlife, though specific sightings may vary. The presence of lakes and surrounding vegetation creates a habitat that can attract various insects and potentially small mammals. While the reserve's base is stony, leading to fewer water plants, the overall environment still supports a surprising amount of biodiversity. Remember to maintain a respectful distance and avoid any actions that could disrupt the natural behavior of the animals you encounter.
For those interested in photography, the bird hides provide fantastic opportunities to capture stunning images of wildlife. A telephoto lens is almost essential for getting clear shots of birds in flight or at a distance. The scenic beauty of the lakes themselves also offers excellent subjects for landscape photography, particularly during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset.
Navigating the Trails and Terrain
Footwear is a key consideration for visitors. Given the potential for muddy conditions, sturdy, waterproof boots are highly recommended to ensure comfort and safety. The reserve also features some creative seating areas scattered along the paths, providing opportunities to rest and enjoy the scenery. However, some reviews have noted a lack of benches in certain areas, so be prepared for this possibility.
For those with dogs, the reserve is a suitable place for a walk, but owners must be diligent about cleaning up after their pets. The presence of horses on some trails can contribute to muddiness, and it's a point of contention for some visitors who feel dog owners are held to a higher standard of responsibility. Always be mindful of other users and the environment when navigating the trails.
