"Fantastic place to visit. One of the smallest museums I've ever visited but also one of the best. I would honestly give more stars if I could. The staff are very knowledgeable and passionate. When you visit make sure you donate (Free to visit, but they run off your donations), we need to make sure places like this exist in the future."

"Fantastic visit we went on a Sunday when they had some extra displays on and even a gun show firing off some rounds and telling you about the guns"
Incurable Customs
"Came across this by chance. Originally the site of a 16thC battery created to defend against the Spanish Armada but then reused in WWIl to defend against German invasion. The museum wasn't open at the time but, from outside, it looked pretty interesting and by all accounts it is well worth a visit. There are great views over Fishcombe Cove."

A Glimpse into Military History
The current heritage centre focuses primarily on its WWII role, showcasing a collection of wartime weapons, artifacts, and ephemera. Visitors can explore the museum exhibits, which are lovingly curated by dedicated volunteers. The underground tunnel tours offer a unique perspective, allowing you to step back in time and imagine the operational life of the battery during wartime. The knowledgeable staff are passionate about sharing stories and historical context, making the visit both educational and engaging.
Beyond the historical exhibits, the location itself is a significant draw. Perched on the cliffs, the battery offers breathtaking panoramic views over Fishcombe Cove and the English Channel. This scenic beauty adds another layer to the visitor experience, providing a tranquil contrast to the military history. It’s a place where you can learn about the past while enjoying the present-day natural splendor.
The Heart of the Centre: Volunteers and Donations
Crucially, the centre operates on a donation-based model. While entry is free, the survival and continued development of the heritage centre depend entirely on the generosity of its visitors. This means that every contribution, no matter how small, plays a vital role in maintaining the exhibits, preserving the tunnels, and supporting the volunteers. Visitors are strongly encouraged to donate what they can to help ensure this historical site remains accessible for future generations.
This model also means that the experience is often more personal. Volunteers are eager to share their knowledge and stories, often going above and beyond to make the visit memorable. The lack of commercial pressure allows for a more genuine appreciation of the history and the efforts involved in its preservation. It’s a testament to the power of community passion.
