What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find Dead Man's Plack to be an interesting historical site with a compelling legend. The woodland walk to the monument is generally enjoyed, especially by families. Some note the walk can be longer than expected depending on the starting point, and clear navigation is important.
"Interesting history . The memorial was put up by the Iremongers who lived in Wherwell priory . They took the names of Elfrida and Athelwold into the family and several descendants have been named after them"
Alison Palmer
"The Saxon King Edgar I of England sent his most trusted real, Æthelwald, to meet Ælfthryth the daughter of the Earl of Devonshire to assess her suitability as a wife and queen but the Earl fell immediately in love with her and married her himself. When he returned to court he told the king that she was totally unsuitable and did not reveal his marriage but the king found out through court gossip and arranged a hunt in Harewood forest and invited the Earl, murdering him with a spear at this spot and taking Ælfthryth as his wife and queen.
To get to the spot you need to take the footpath half way down the lane and cross the fields up into the forest (the other footpaths that go directly into the forest don't take you here) Follow the path through the forest and you will see a green sign pointing to the left saying permissible footpath to the monument through private land. Follow this to the monument"

"Long walk if you follow signs shown I.e from lay-by opposite Paws Dogwalk entrance"
