"The remains of a large motte and bailey castle, the motte is on the east side with the bailey to the west. Another enclosure with four fishponds stands to the east as a cropmark. The earliest mention of the castle is from 1204 which puts it in royal hands although excavations show evidence of earlier Anglo-Saxon occupation. It is thought that Bishop Odo of Bayeux built the castle and had a L-shaped hall built in its earliest days. The motte was levelled at some point and a curtain wall was built by William de Chesney after the land came into his hands turning it into a enclosure castle made of stone. The monument includes an 11th century motte and bailey castle, with a bailey on either side of the central motte, and a latter 12th century enclosure castle. It is in the care of English Heritage and is free to visit."
