A solo day trip from London to the most mystical town in England 🌿✨ Glastonbury’s been on my list for ages – but it’s not exactly the easiest place to get to by public transport. So I joined a Glastonbury day tour to make my life easier :D!! 💰 £99 per adult (includes Glastonbury Abbey entry + a stop at Cheddar too) ticket booked through @fever_uk 🚌 Picked up from Earl’s Court early morning, the...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Glastonbury Abbey for its magical atmosphere, historical significance, and beautiful grounds, making it a truly special place. While some note the increased entrance fees and occasional signage issues, the overall experience is highly recommended for history buffs, legend enthusiasts, and those seeking a peaceful, evocative visit.

"We visited Glastonbury Abbey on Tuesday and had a wonderful time revisiting a place that holds many fond memories from my childhood. It’s been quite a while since my last visit — the entrance fee has certainly increased from the 20p it cost back in the 1980s! — but the magic and atmosphere of the site remain every bit as special.

I explored the grounds using my mobility scooter, and despite the gravel terrain, I found it to be accessible and easy to navigate. The only part I couldn’t reach was the lower floor of the Lady Chapel, but this didn’t detract from the overall experience in the slightest.

We did try to find the museum but couldn’t locate it — perhaps it has moved? A little more signage would be helpful there.

On a personal note, the Abbey serves as the setting for my third murder mystery novel, Murder at the Monastery, and it was fantastic to revisit the location and soak in the atmosphere for inspiration.

All in all, we spent a lovely couple of hours exploring this historic and evocative site. Glastonbury Abbey remains a truly special place, and I highly recommend a visit for anyone interested in history, legend, or simply enjoying a peaceful and scenic spot."

"I have long wanted to visit the ruins of the famous abbey, where the remains of the legendary King Arthur (a very tall man, more than 2 meters tall) and his wife, Queen Guinevere, were found, and what I saw was very impressive. The place has amazing energy. Friendly people will explain everything in the information center. There is also a cafe. You can spend several hours without noticing how pleasantly the time passed.🙏🙏👍"

"I visited the abbey as a part of a day trip to Glastonbury and because I didn’t get to do it the last time I was in Glastonbury.

The admissions desk staff were really helpful and friendly and gave good information.

The abbey grounds are a lot bigger than I thought and I could see it being a lovely place to have a picnic with a family. There was plenty of information dotted around. Of course photos of Arthur and Guinevere’s resting place is a must.

I’d do it again with my family."

The Legend of King Arthur at Glastonbury

Glastonbury Abbey is deeply intertwined with the legend of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere. Medieval monks claimed to have discovered their tomb within the Abbey grounds in the 12th century, a tale that significantly boosted the Abbey's prestige and pilgrimage appeal. While historians debate the authenticity of this discovery, the legend has cemented Glastonbury's reputation as the mythical Isle of Avalon. Visitors can still see the supposed site of their tomb, adding a layer of mystique to the ruins. Instagram+1

The association with Arthurian legend draws many visitors seeking a connection to ancient myths and a sense of the mystical. The Abbey's dramatic ruins, set against the backdrop of Glastonbury Tor, further enhance this otherworldly atmosphere, making it a focal point for those interested in folklore and historical mysteries. Instagram

Exploring the Abbey Barn and Medieval Architecture

A remarkable surviving structure within the Abbey grounds is the Abbey Barn, dating back to around 1340. This impressive building showcases exceptional medieval carpentry and is a testament to the architectural prowess of the era. Despite its ecclesiastical association, it functioned as part of the abbey estate rather than a tithe barn for collecting church taxes. Instagram

Its substantial size, approximately 28 meters long and 10 meters wide, highlights the wealth and resources of Glastonbury Abbey during its peak. Visiting the barn offers a tangible connection to the daily life and operational scale of the monastery, providing a different perspective beyond the religious and legendary aspects. Instagram

Spiritual and Mystical Significance

Beyond its historical and legendary connections, Glastonbury Abbey is considered a site of profound spiritual and mystical energy. Many visitors report feeling a unique atmosphere, often described as sacred or ancient. This energy is attributed to the site's long history, potentially predating Christianity, and its association with various spiritual traditions. Instagram+2

The Abbey is part of the wider 'Isle of Avalon' lore, a place associated with healing, wisdom, and spiritual awakening. Whether you're drawn by history, legend, or a sense of the sacred, the Abbey offers a contemplative space to connect with something deeper. The surrounding landscape, including Glastonbury Tor and Wearyall Hill, further contributes to the area's mystical reputation. Instagram
