木 Building barns like churches. ‌ I remember standing alone inside the Great Coxwell Barn, circa 1292, with the light filtering through just so and experiencing a quiet moment of transcendence. ‌ This Aisled Cruck barn in Scio, Oregon—covered barn country—is inspired by the great barns of medieval England. ‌ It was an honor to have Lloyd Khan, editor of Shelter, visit the site. A cathedral of agriculture. The Great Coxwell tithe barn is the finest surviving medieval barn in England. Dendrochronological analysis has shown that it was built in one go, from timbers felled in the winter of 1291/2. It was owned by the Cistercian monks of Beaulieu Abbey, to store their crops, and has been used by generations of farmers for centuries. Now it’s cared for by the National Trust. ...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Great Coxwell Barn for its impressive scale, remarkable preservation, and tranquil atmosphere. Many are awestruck by the medieval architecture, particularly the vast wooden roof structure. While parking is limited and facilities are minimal, the free entry and the opportunity to experience such a significant historical site in a peaceful setting make it a highly recommended visit.

"Friday 05/09/2025:- The tithe barn - the Great Coxwell Barn - is thought to have been built in the late 13th century. Amazing. It was a glorious sunny day which added to our enjoyment of this huge ancient wooden structure and its surroundings. It was erected for and used by the Cistercian monks, a Roman Catholic order, but in more recent centuries it was regularly used by farmers which explains why it's survived to this day. It was open but the leaflet holders were empty and no-one was there. We were too early for the advertised guided tours later in the afternoon. But in another small openfaced barn there were information boards that gave us the barn's history etc. Definitely worth a visit."

"I thought it is a church 😃
I loved it as much as any other old building.
The little pond, the horses, the man carving objects made of wood in a saxon barn."
