Visitors consistently praise St Mary the Virgin, Great Warley, for its breathtaking and unique Art Nouveau interior, often calling it 'The Pearl Church.' The knowledgeable volunteers and the intricate details of the mother-of-pearl and metalwork are frequently highlighted as major draws. However, the extremely limited opening hours are a significant drawback for many, requiring careful planning.

"Tucked beside a quiet lay-by in Essex, St Mary the Virgin, Great Warley, is less a church and more a theatrical set for an Art Nouveau dream. Built in 1902, it’s a riot of stucco lilies, mother-of-pearl shimmer, and metallic flourishes that catch the light.

We visited during Heritage Open Days and were shown around by Fiona. Her delight in the details is infectious, and pointed out everything from the walnut furniture to fine details on the organ (Thank you Fiona it was an absolute pleasure to meet you).

The nickname “The Pearl Church” is entirely deserved. Without a doubt this place captured my heart."

"Outstandingly beautiful Art Nouveau church built by the same architect as the Horniman Museum, the Bishopsgate Institute & The Whitechapel Gallery in London. Gorgeous interior and fantastic metalwork screen, pulpit, organ & lectern all dripping with Arts & Craft details. Turn up between 2-4 on Thursdays during the Summer months for a very informative tour by a church volunteer. A hidden gem!"
