What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Hitchin Lido is praised for its beautiful, heated 50m outdoor pool and charming 1930s art deco architecture. Visitors enjoy the vintage feel and the convenience of modern facilities, though some have experienced issues with customer service consistency and session length.
"Wow wow wow! What an incredible, heated, 50m outdoor pool. Lovely, traditional, 1930s vintage art deco, accessed through a modern leisure centre (with indoor pool). We booked an early morning lane swim via the everyone active app. The session was for an hour, but there was no rush to leave (apparently we were welcome to stay all morning). We used the indoor changing facilities which were clean, hot showers, and lockers available (£1 refundable). The walk out to the pool is fairly long (up some steps or an accessible ramp), so recommend wearing sliders. There are outdoor changing rooms and lockers in the 1930s building, which is slightly closer to the pool. The pool is heated to around 25° and there were 4 lifeguards on when we visited, constantly fishing leaves etc from the pool on what was a fairly breezy day. Went for a sausage sandwich at the pool cafe after our swim - tasty 😋 On site parking (£1 for 3 hours, refundable at the reception after your swim). Smashing, well organised facility which is well worth a visit."

"Lack of transparent customer service. Sunny day, turned up with kids without booking, full, not a problem. Unable to give me a time would be free. Didn't inform me, only another customer that outdoor pool had closed, moved all into indoor pool and were over full. I've not a problem with this and even though it was a Monday evening, why they hadn't taken the weather into consideration to get more staff on. Can fully appreciate the consumer does not understand the business p&l, rota, risk assessments etc but a lot of revenue turned down.
I asked if I had booked in advance would that help, told depends on spaces available and to go online, no help. Struggled to find booking online, told to download an app. Downloaded app and booked a session, was strictly told it would be at that time and not before. Left to get drinks with my girls, my son contacted me saying him and his mate (part of my booking and in town) were allowed in 25 mins early. I know there could have been plenty of people leave or classes finished, but was told couldn't go in early and then allowed in early. Staff should be singing off the same hymn sheet.
Finally in, pool rules says no jumping in, plenty of people doing so (including mine) without being told to stop. Boys bring a soft football in to play with, had to tell them to be mindful of others, at the end told we couldn't play with it. Not a problem, removed ball. Checked several signs and couldn't see this as a rule. Inconsistent with rules, I don't mind being told not to do something but must be in line with rules.
Went back next day, sunny weather, outside pool open later with staff, but only for those wishing to swim lengths. A great improvement from the day before to manage customer service, safety and revenue. Made sense this day to do that, was only told outdoors was for length swimming when got to it though. Good to have been told, but customer service as a whole could be improved like being told at reception, could have been proactive to manager customer expectation earlier on.
Will go back as customer service wasn't terrible, just disappointing with lack of consistent, transparent and proactive customer service from staff as a collective team."

"While it’s a lovely lido, I'm going to have to give it one star as there is no excuse for shutting the lido at 6pm, which means people will start being harassed to get out at about 5:50pm (this by the way is in no way reflected on their website or Google page, which say they close at 10:00pm). On a Friday afternoon with 30 degrees, this just doesn’t make any sense, sorry. More reasonable working hours, like until 8pm at least in the summer, would make this place more accessible."

The Lido Experience: History Meets Modernity
Visitors can choose between the modern indoor changing facilities, which are clean and offer hot showers and lockers, or the original outdoor changing rooms located closer to the pool. The walk from the indoor facilities to the pool is a bit of a trek, so wearing sliders is recommended. The lido also hosts special events, including late-night swimming sessions, adding a unique dimension to the summer experience.
While the lido offers a delightful escape, some guests have noted inconsistencies in customer service and rule enforcement. It's advisable to book sessions in advance via the Everyone Active app to secure your spot, as it can get busy, especially on warm days. The one-hour session limit has also been a point of contention for some visitors, particularly families.
Maximizing Your Visit: Practical Tips
Consider the timing of your visit. Weekday mornings often offer a more relaxed atmosphere with fewer crowds, allowing for a more leisurely swim. If you're looking for a unique experience, the late-night swimming sessions provide a different ambiance. Be aware of the session duration; typically one hour, it requires efficient changing and swimming. The on-site cafe is a convenient spot for post-swim refreshments.
Parking is available and the fee is usually refundable at reception, so keep your receipt. While the lido is a cherished local amenity, be prepared for potential inconsistencies in customer service and rule application, as noted by some visitors. Checking the latest information on opening hours and session availability directly with the venue is always a good practice.
