What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Muir Woods is widely praised for its breathtaking ancient redwood trees and accessible trails, offering a serene escape close to San Francisco. Visitors appreciate the natural beauty and the opportunity to walk among giants. However, the mandatory reservation system and potential for crowds can be a point of frustration for some.
"Have been a walk here with my kids a few times, it's a nice woods. Most times we have been it has been quiet (not many dogs or people)."
Kayte Sutherland
"I have walked through Calais woods many times. Many organisations have worked together to improve the woods for people to enjoy. Unfortunately there are some who have no regard for these efforts. Most of the artwork installations have been vandalised beyond repair and as I was involved in the installation of the artwork, I know that there was a large investment of funds and labour put into the project.
Please look after our wonderful wildlife and environment - we depend on one another."
Mark Monaghan
"Bit tricky to find at first - directions via google maps took us totally to the wrong place. Decent find when you do figure it out though - pleasantly surprised by the walks available considering how close to residential areas the woods are.
Down side of so many house nearby was that it was very busy with other dogs which made our walk a bit challenging at times.
Good spot though."

The Majesty of Coast Redwoods
The ecosystem within Muir Woods is delicate and interconnected. The towering redwoods create a unique microclimate, with fog playing a crucial role in their survival by providing moisture. The forest floor is often carpeted with ferns and sorrel, creating a lush, green understory. Recent efforts have also focused on restoring Redwood Creek to improve habitat for native salmon.
Visitors are encouraged to tread lightly and respect the natural environment. Staying on marked trails ensures the preservation of the forest floor and protects the sensitive root systems of the redwoods. The sheer scale and age of these trees offer a profound connection to nature and a reminder of the importance of conservation.
Planning Your Visit: Reservations and Logistics
It's highly recommended to book your reservations as early as possible, especially if you plan to visit during peak season, weekends, or holidays. The system accommodates both advance and day-of reservations, but day-of spots can fill up quickly. Planning ahead is key to a stress-free experience and ensures you can access this popular natural wonder.
Beyond reservations, consider the timing of your visit. Weekday mornings are often the least crowded, allowing for a more peaceful and immersive experience. Early mornings also offer beautiful, soft light for photography. While the park is beautiful year-round, winter mornings can be particularly magical with a misty ambiance.
Navigating the Trails and Experience
For those seeking a bit more exploration, the Hillside Trail offers a slightly more challenging loop that provides different perspectives of the forest. This trail can be combined with the Main Trail to create a 1.9-mile loop, typically taking about 1.5 hours to complete. The elevation gain is minimal, making it a manageable option for most visitors.
While the park is generally quiet and serene, it can get busy. Redditors have noted that while the woods themselves are nice, sometimes nearby residential areas can lead to busy trails with dogs, though this is not a universal experience. The park's natural beauty is enhanced by the sounds of Redwood Creek, which has undergone restoration efforts to support salmon populations.
