A lovely setting this one is. The Lock Stock and Barrel (Newbury). A Fuller's pub with 4 x ales on I just have the standard London Pride (£5.80 pint.) It's as flat as a poncairk.

It felt like summer in Newbury today. It’s a brilliant town to visit for a day. We explored the town centre and stopped at The Lock, Stock and Barrel pub by Newbury Lock for lunch. David Jerome

"Newbury Lock is a lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal in the town centre of Newbury, it has a rise/fall of 3 ft 6 in (1.07 m), and is situated just upstream of Newbury Bridge.

Nicholas wharf, St.Nicholas Church and Lock stock and barrel are at the same location.

It was built in 1796, as part of the construction of the Kennet and Avon Canal linking Newbury and Bath.

Adjacent to the lock is Ebb and Flow Water sculpture was sculpted by Peter Randall commissioned by Newbury Town Council and is located at Newbury Lock, Berkshire. He was selected to develop designs for an artwork for Newbury Lock, a site of local historical significance, and to respond to the Town Trail’s theme of ‘Flow’. It comprises of an enormous silver-grey Furstensteiner Granite bowl, 2.377 metres in diameter ,1.026 meters high and weighing 7 tonnes, set at the centre of a spiral granite path leading down from the lock. The bowl is connected to the lock by underground piping which activates the sculpture by natural water pressure. When the lock fills, water flows into the bowl and then empties away as the level of the lock water goes down.

The granite for the bowl was quarried and turned in Germany and carved by the artist in Devon. Its interior patterning of opposing spirals controls the water as it rises and falls.

Peter described the idea behind his work: "The difference in water levels between the canal and river gives Newbury Lock a great sense of drama and potential energy... I liked the idea of using the dynamic of changing water levels as a way of activating a sculpture"."

Satish Kumar Singh

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History and Engineering of Newbury Lock

Newbury Lock is a vital component of the historic Kennet and Avon Canal, a waterway that links Newbury with Bath. Constructed in 1796, the lock was part of the ambitious project to create a navigable route across southern England. The lock itself features a rise/fall of 3 ft 6 in (1.07 m) and is strategically situated just upstream of Newbury Bridge, playing a crucial role in managing water levels for boat traffic. Its historical significance lies not only in its engineering but also in its contribution to trade and transport during its operational heyday.

The Kennet and Avon Canal has a rich history, and Newbury Lock stands as a testament to the ingenuity of 18th-century civil engineering. The canal's construction was a major undertaking, involving the creation of numerous locks, aqueducts, and tunnels. Today, the canal is a popular destination for leisure boating, and locks like Newbury are maintained to allow these modern-day adventurers to experience a piece of history. Watching boats navigate the lock provides a fascinating insight into the mechanics of canal transport and the enduring legacy of this waterway. [^Reviews]

Adjacent to the lock is the striking Ebb and Flow Water Sculpture, a modern artistic addition that complements the historical engineering. This sculpture, made of granite, is ingeniously connected to the lock via underground piping. It utilizes the natural water pressure from the lock filling and emptying to activate the sculpture, creating a mesmerizing display of water movement. The artist, Peter Randall, intended for the sculpture to respond to the 'dynamic of changing water levels,' adding a contemporary artistic layer to the historical site. [^Reviews]
