David Jerome
"Newbury Lock is a lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal in the town centre of Newbury, it has a rise/fall of 3 ft 6 in (1.07 m), and is situated just upstream of Newbury Bridge.
Nicholas wharf, St.Nicholas Church and Lock stock and barrel are at the same location.
It was built in 1796, as part of the construction of the Kennet and Avon Canal linking Newbury and Bath.
Adjacent to the lock is Ebb and Flow Water sculpture was sculpted by Peter Randall commissioned by Newbury Town Council and is located at Newbury Lock, Berkshire. He was selected to develop designs for an artwork for Newbury Lock, a site of local historical significance, and to respond to the Town Trail’s theme of ‘Flow’. It comprises of an enormous silver-grey Furstensteiner Granite bowl, 2.377 metres in diameter ,1.026 meters high and weighing 7 tonnes, set at the centre of a spiral granite path leading down from the lock. The bowl is connected to the lock by underground piping which activates the sculpture by natural water pressure. When the lock fills, water flows into the bowl and then empties away as the level of the lock water goes down.
The granite for the bowl was quarried and turned in Germany and carved by the artist in Devon. Its interior patterning of opposing spirals controls the water as it rises and falls.
Peter described the idea behind his work: "The difference in water levels between the canal and river gives Newbury Lock a great sense of drama and potential energy... I liked the idea of using the dynamic of changing water levels as a way of activating a sculpture"."
