In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Geology of Old Harry Rocks

Old Harry Rocks are a spectacular example of chalk sea stacks that have been shaped by millions of years of coastal erosion. These formations are part of the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its geological significance. The rocks are composed of Cretaceous chalk, which was laid down in a shallow sea around 65 million years ago. Instagram

Over millennia, the relentless action of waves, wind, and rain has carved away at the softer chalk cliffs. Initially, arches formed, which eventually collapsed, leaving behind the distinctive stacks we see today. The name 'Old Harry' is thought to be derived from a local pirate, Harry Paye, who reputedly used the rocks as a landmark. Instagram The ongoing process of erosion means that the landscape is constantly changing, with smaller stacks and features appearing and disappearing over time. Instagram

Understanding the geological history adds another layer of appreciation to the dramatic scenery. It's a testament to the powerful forces of nature that have sculpted this iconic stretch of the English coastline. Instagram+1
