I first visited the ‘Parallel Roads’ of Glen Roy in the Scottish Highlands in 1995 and was so moved by the pure majesty and tranquillity of the place that I wrote a song about it. On a road trip across the Highlands with my husband Gary in September this year, it made sense to re-visit this place that had made such an impact on me 29 years earlier. I grabbed my guitar out of our van and strummed ...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Glen Roy for its profound peace, stunning natural beauty, and the unique geological phenomenon of the Parallel Roads. Many appreciate the lack of crowds, offering a truly tranquil escape. Some find the drive challenging and the lack of amenities a consideration, but the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive.

"I have visited this place several times, by car, by bicycle and on foot. But this valley never fails to impress me. Above all, hardly anyone comes here. I therefore ask all visitors not to leave anything behind, as this place is virtually untouched by tourism.

There is nothing to do here except enjoy the view and take in the absolute solitude of the place.

Cycling through the valley can be tiring because the wind and changing gradients can be challenging. Otherwise, touring the valley is very relaxing as you hardly ever meet anyone here. Most of the time, you will only see sheep.

You can also walk up one of the mountains, although there are no official paths. This means you have to follow wild trails and be careful not to disturb the local flora and fauna. The summits usually take longer than expected because, contrary to appearances, the distance is greater. The view from the top is often sobering, but the climb has its charm nonetheless. You go up, but there's nothing at the top, so you just go back down again. The cycle of life."

Lots of sheep in the glen just wondering around.
So peaceful and relaxing place.
A place you could visit over and over again.
A Perfect place to walk and explore any time of the year.
Plenty of areas to park in your camper van , or even do some wild camping. There is a car park as well."

Lisa Robertson

"Very quiet and calm glen without any other people. This is how Scotland must have been before the hordes of tourist invaded. The valley is also geologically important, even Darwin visited the "parallel streets"."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Geological Mystery of the Parallel Roads

The Parallel Roads of Glen Roy are a series of striking, parallel horizontal lines etched into the hillsides. These features are not man-made roads but rather ancient shorelines of a glacial lake that existed during the last Ice Age. For centuries, their formation puzzled scientists, with even Charles Darwin studying them in an attempt to understand their origin. InstagramReddit+1

The prevailing scientific explanation is that these terraces formed along the shores of an ancient ice-dammed loch. The loch existed for a relatively brief period, estimated to be between 900 and 1,100 years. As the ice dam melted or shifted, the loch level would have dropped, leaving behind these distinct horizontal markers at different elevations. Instagram

Visiting Glen Roy offers a unique opportunity to witness this geological marvel firsthand. While there are informational plaques to explain the phenomenon, the true magic lies in standing amidst the landscape and contemplating the immense forces of nature that shaped it over millennia. Reddit

Experiencing Glen Roy: Beyond the Roads

Visitors often remark on the incredible solitude found here. It's a place where you can truly escape the hustle and bustle, with very few other people around. This quietude is often punctuated only by the gentle sounds of nature and the presence of sheep that roam freely throughout the glen. Reddit

For the more adventurous, there are opportunities for walking and exploring. While official paths to summits are scarce, the chance to traverse wild trails offers a more immersive connection with the landscape. Just remember to tread lightly and respect the pristine environment. Reddit
