What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Pett Level Beach is praised for its peaceful atmosphere, vast shingle expanse, and unique geological features, offering a special light that captivates visitors. While the shingle terrain and the need to check tide times are noted, the overall sentiment is one of a beautiful, soul-lifting coastal escape.
"Lovely, quiet shingle beach with a path down the length of it, lots of benches. There is a cafe there too, lots of places to park for free on quiet days."
Kimberley Salmons
"Love this place. A vast expanse of coast and never too busy. There seems to be a special light there. In the little church there is a great selection of 2nd hand books. You can do a lovely walk to Winchelsea or if you feel more ambitious to Rye Harbour. A visit here always lifts the soul."
Sandy Holman
"Shingle beach with a backdrop of rugged sandstone cliffs. Relentless coastal erosion forms striking shapes in the base of the cliff, with caves, pillars and arches on a miniature scale.
Different coloured bands of rock give the cliffs a very distinctive appearance, more similar to parts of the Jurassic coast than the rest of East Sussex. It's therefore unsurprising that fossils can be found here.
The beach has appeared in a couple of music videos, firstly David Bowie's Ashes to Ashes and more recently Keane's Atlantic.
There's plenty of free roadside parking a short walk from the beach. The walk to Winchelsea Beach is rewarded with a nice little café, and you can go further to Rye Harbour to make a day of it. There are toilets a couple of minutes walk from the beach, though they are closed over the winter season.
Important note - the sea comes right up to the base of cliffs, so be aware of the tide times if you're following the beach any distance to the west."
