The Radcliffe family were once important landowners in Lancashire with Sir James having fought with King Henry VI. It's believed that the tower was erected in 1403 as a defensive building being close to a bend in the River Irwell and was originally connected to a Manor House and Hall. It had three stories, the ground floor that's left having been the kitchen with three fireplaces."
