Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the River Chelmer Towpath for its beautiful, peaceful walks and abundant wildlife, making it a hidden gem for nature lovers and dog walkers. While parking can be a challenge, the serene atmosphere and opportunities for activities like kayaking and fishing are highly praised.
"Great place to visit, nice walks and fishing can be excellent. Lovely walks through woods and wildlife such as Kingfishers and Herons are in abundance. Parking not so good, better to get there early.
Blackwater private fishing, members only Ilford Club. Canal (chelmer and Blackwater Navigation, controlled by Maldon Angling Club £8 a day from bailiff on the bank (cash only to bailiff with id) Ilford control back river called Neville’s Cut and from Beeleigh Bridge down to sewer outlet on day ticket £5 per day from bailiff on the bank.
Range of fish, nearly every species except Barbel. Carp found throughout range from a few lbs to 30lb carp.
Anglers must have a landing net, and a fishing mat to put carp, pike or larger fish on whilst unhooking. All fish must be returned to the water. Area good for silver fishing."

"Great place to kayak or Paddle Board. There are several places to park and drop in to the canal, Beeleigh falls, Heybridge Basin or Maldon Tesco. The water is generally pretty high quality and the section from Beeleigh to the Basin does seem to be very well tended. You will need to get a day or annual license to use this stretch of water but the prices (£5 day license or £36 annual) is more than worth it. It is a mixed use waterway and there will be canal boats and anglers around but on the whole, and from my experience, people seem to share the water well. Most of the time it is a nice quiet place to go but when the weather is good or when people have time off it can get quite busy but a bit of courtesy and consideration goes a long way. I use it at least once a week and would recommend it as a safe and fun place to SUP, just be mindful that the canal is not straight and consider the wind direction and speed before you set off so as not to get caught out when you go round a bend."
