Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Roa Island for its scenic coastal walks, opportunities to see seals, and the convenient ferry service to Piel Island. The free parking and friendly cafe are also highlighted as significant positives. Some mention interesting historical remnants and the unique charm of the island's landscape.

"A great view of Piel Island, pebbly coastal walk round to see the history. Cement added to stop the waves crashing up. Boats waiting for the warmer months. Further out a pebbly/seashell hike to the reserve, past the driftwood seats and back. An old rusty ship and a rotting seal made for an interesting walk. Good to have the sea air in your face too!"

"Roa Island was an Island. A Causeway was built and it had a railway line. In the 1930's the line was removed.
The old Custom House / Watchtower is now a private house. It is centuries old and the coat of arms of I believe of King Stephen are shown but very windswept. The view is across to Walney Island. The Custom House / Watchtower is what is says originally, for watching anyone coming down the Walney Channel to originally enter the small fishing village eventually port to Barrow in Furness to make their way to the Cistercian Furness Abbey.
I have known this place all my life. I came for my annual holiday from the 1940s as my parents came from the area."

"Great place to visit, parking is free! Nice for an afternoon stroll, interesting shoreline with RNLI lifeboat station and ferry boat across to Piel Island. There's a great cafe at the end with very friendly staff and great food at good prices. Pathway from here to Barrow around 4 miles. Interesting boats and abandoned ships to see too."
