Unpleasant stretches for a single-hander?

Hi All, I'm looking into buying a boat to become a continuous cruiser but I'm very aware my previous canal experience has been pleasant summer days with a group to handle locks and mooring. With that in mind, can anyone recommend a slightly more difficult route I can take a…

First time in Rochdale: Where is worth visiting?

I haven't planned at all just hopped on a train from Manchester. I'm mostly here for a walk and the odd pint but I don't want to miss anything fun. Nice buildings, nice sights, cool shops, live music. Whatever you find fun here on a Saturday afternoon :) Thanks in advance

"I was born in Hebden Bridge, worked in the Calder Valley or Happy Valley as we have always known it and now, due to the TV program, most people also know it as that. The Valley has changed a tremendous amount in the last 60 years and most of the industry I knew has gone, the industrial workers have gone, most of the mills have gone also. However there are a few things that haven't changed and the bits that have changed are mostly for the better. One of those is the Rochdale Canal which brought the initial prosperity to the Town, allowing the textile mills to receive the coal efficiently and cheaply, then ship out the cloth and garments to near and far. The canal was the life blood for many years. Now its all about leisure but its still there and still used. We must all be thankful for that and the many people who fought and worked to bring it back into use. I now walk along from Sowerby Bridge and marvel at the ingenuity of the designers, surveyors and the Navi's that built it (of which one was an ancestor) although a scandal at the time. It is a walk that I will never tire of, never stop seeing something different and never stop wondering "who built that, how and why" Its like stepping back in time.... and I love it"

"I have been walking up and down this canal since i were a kid. I love it. However.... Trying to push my disabled daughter is seriously hard work. We get on at lock 49 and walk as far as i can. Today we actually managed to get to todmorden. It was fookin hard work."
