WOOLF WEDNESDAYS: Pilgrimage to Monk’s House, part III Where was I? Ah, yes… Muddy, bloody & smelly, walking through the beautiful village of Rodmell, towards Virginia’s country home. On July 3rd, 1919, she wrote in her diary: “We own Monks House (this is almost the first time I’ve written a name which I hope to write many thousands of times before I’ve done with it) for ever. It happened thus....

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Monk's House for its intimate atmosphere, beautiful gardens, and the serene countryside setting. The knowledgeable and friendly staff enhance the experience, making it a peaceful and inspiring visit for literary enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Some note the lack of on-site refreshments and the limited viewing of upstairs rooms as minor drawbacks.

"Small but quaint with beautiful gardens. Very relaxing to sit toverlooking the downs, quintessential English Summer. As a cremacist, I did not like fireplace painted by Vanessa Bell as painting is a different art to ceramics and it lacked technical expertise. Note there was nowhere there or nearby to buy a drink. Staff were very friendly."

Roz Adie

"A nice house in beautiful and extensive grounds. We went on a sunny afternoon and it was quite delightful. It was the second time we had visited and I think I enjoyed it more this time. Park down the road and walk up. There are no refreshments at the house but you could take a picnic and then play bowls. Why not!"

Judith Barnett

"Beautifully secluded house and garden with an intimate feel and the nicest, most knowledgeable staff. I enjoyed walking across the downs from Southease Station up to the house and particularly loved seeing the English countywide and the garden at Monk’s House in all the glory of spring. You can easily spend a day here if you take lunch and it’s well worth it."
