Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Roman Painted House for its remarkable preservation and fascinating insights into Roman life, especially given its free admission. While some note limited parking and variable opening hours, the historical significance and the quality of the preserved mosaics and heating system make it a highly recommended quick stop in Dover.

"It's pretty amazing to think that this was discovered during roadworks! Very nicely preserved and presented in a way that you can imagine how it looked in 300AD. The Romans worked hard with limited tools to create this building complete with heating system! You can view the house from the gallery looking down and also the basement so you are on the same level as the building. It's free to enter, there isn't really a car park but there are some disabled spaces just outside. There are display cabinets with artifacts found on site and some interesting plaster panels showing some of the paintings. Thereare toilets on site and a small gift shop. Doesn't take long to view, we stayed around 30 minutes but didn't read everything. Very interesting piece of history, well worth a visit."
