Visitors praise the Grand Shaft as a unique and mind-blowing historical site, marveling at its triple spiral staircase and the engineering prowess required for its construction. The volunteers are commended for their dedication to maintaining the site. However, the limited opening hours and occasional unreliability of listed times can lead to disappointment for those who arrive unprepared.

"Open one Sunday per month from March to November. 10.30am to 4pm. Donations are welcome. Pay at the bottom office.

2025 open Sundays: 20th July, 17th August, 20-21st September, 19th October, 16th November. See photo for more details.

Free on street parking 1 hour at the bottom and lots of free parking at the top. I recommend parking at the top so that you can explore the fascinating landscape and military buildings and drop redoubt.

"Visited here on an open day and to be fair I’ve been in here plenty of times through the years. It’s triple staircase that was built for the barracks above (which are no longer there), so the troops could scramble from the barracks to the beach if ever there was an invasion. The volunteers do a brilliant job keeping it going and maintaining the site. The best time to go is when the Drop Redoubt has an open weekend so you could easily visit both and enjoy the area and see what once was. Wheelchair access is a no no as it’s a stairwell to the top and plenty of parking along snargate street or when the drop redoubt has it’s open day you can park up there. Most of all it’s Free, there is a donation box but that’s a personal choice also there is no waiting time to enter either."

"Interesting hidden gem and and a photogenic spot.
I was so glad that exactly on the day when we were in Dover, it was open! And with going down the steps, we could arrive down to the seashore and didn't have to climb back to the fort and come down to the town, to continue our way to the white cliffs.
Thanks to the volunteers who let it open to the public!
Before visit, check their website to see when it is open!"
