Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Sapperton Canal Tunnel as a beautiful piece of history and a great starting point for peaceful walks in the Cotswolds. The impressive engineering of the entrances is a highlight, though many note the tunnel is blocked and unmaintained. The surrounding scenery and the potential for exploration are highly appreciated.

"A beautiful piece of history

The Sapperton tunnel was used as a major goods transport hub for hundreds of years and was last used around 1911.

It's incredible to see what a great shape its in after all of these years forgotten and left to become part of the landscape again.

It's a real shame that people don't really appreciate history anymore and dedicate a few hours a month supporting the maintenance of such hidden historical pieces.

The tunnel itself is blocked for obvious reasons due to no maintenance but still in good shape considering. Right next to another historical venue that is closed, The Tunnel Inn which is a lovely piece of architecture.

Recommendation
A nice start to a peaceful walk, enjoy the craftsmanship that went into making a magnificent tunnel entrance.

"Lovely area for walking. It was great to see the entrance to the tunnel. Great bit of history. I parked on the road just by the bridge. There is a little layby there and then walked down. Just passed the tunnel at the top seems to be some sort of closed down pub shame. It really seems a lovely location for it.

You can get to the exit of the tunnel if you search for Sapperton Tunnel, Daneway Portal on google Maps and park at the pub and walk down if you want to visit the other side. It's worth visiting both sides."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Engineering Marvel of the 18th Century

The Sapperton Canal Tunnel, a significant part of the historic Thames and Severn Canal, stands as a remarkable feat of 18th-century engineering. Stretching approximately 1.7 kilometers (over a mile), it was one of the longest canals in Britain at the time of its construction. The tunnel was designed to bypass difficult terrain and connect the River Thames to the River Severn, facilitating crucial trade and transport routes. Its construction involved immense labor and ingenuity, including the creation of 26 ventilation shafts that rise to the surface, a testament to the challenges faced by engineers of that era. InstagramReddit

Today, the tunnel is no longer in use and is blocked, preserving it as a historical monument rather than a navigable waterway. Visitors can explore the imposing stone entrances at both the Kemble and Daneway portals, imagining the bustling activity that once took place here. The sheer scale and the craftsmanship evident in the stonework are awe-inspiring, offering a tangible connection to Britain's industrial past. Reddit

Exploring the area around the tunnel provides a glimpse into the landscape that supported this vital transport link. The surrounding Cotswolds countryside is beautiful, and the walking trails offer a peaceful way to appreciate the historical significance of the tunnel and its impact on the region's development. Exploring the Tunnel Entrances and Surrounding Walks

The primary experience at Sapperton Canal Tunnel involves visiting its two grand entrances. The Kemble entrance, often referred to as the eastern portal, is a majestic stone structure that hints at the tunnel's former glory. It's a popular starting point for walks, offering a sense of scale and history right from the outset. InstagramReddit

The Daneway Portal, the western entrance, provides another perspective. Accessing this end often involves parking near the Daneway Inn and taking a short walk down. Both entrances are surrounded by picturesque Cotswolds scenery, making them ideal for photography and leisurely strolls. Many visitors enjoy combining a visit to the tunnel with a walk along the old canal towpaths or through the charming local villages. InstagramReddit

When planning your visit, remember that the tunnel itself is not accessible. The real joy lies in appreciating the architecture of the entrances, the historical context, and the natural beauty of the area. Comfortable footwear is essential, as the terrain can be uneven, and the walks can be extended to explore more of the scenic countryside. TikTokInstagram
