What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Battlefield Line Railway for its authentic heritage experience, friendly volunteers, and charming Victorian tearoom. While the journey to the station can be a bit rough, the well-maintained facilities and engaging steam train rides make it a highly recommended day out for families and railway enthusiasts alike. Some note that much of the rolling stock is awaiting restoration, but this doesn't detract from the overall positive and nostalgic atmosphere.
"The station is not that easy to find, so look out for the brown sign at the turnoff and be prepared for a rather long drive over a bumpy track to the carpark. Once there it is still not a short walk to the station building.
Riding the Battlefield Line is rather like journeying through a large scrap yard - you see lots of stock but all in need of restoration. It gave me the feeling that they simply had more than they could handle. Oh, for more volunteers.
On the other hand the station buildings and infrastructure are well kept and attractive, particularly Shackerstone, which has a delightful Victorian tearoom and a small museum packed with artifacts, and a very knowledgeable custodian.
I visited in late October when there was only one train running - a 2 car DMU. The sensible timetable allowed for the return journey over the whole line to be completed in an hour."
