"We can only imagine what Springfield Basin was like before the 90s/00s redevelopment took place.
Every hint of the industrial character has been ripped out by the developers. To add balance it's a clean and well maintained head of the navigation, and probably a nice place to live. The bland flats and offices have nice views across the boats and water. I found the architecture badly mimics the warehouses and docks of the past, rather than referencing them. I love finding historical contrasts in a city, but this place just sucks the life out of the space and all historical significance is lost in the nasty smooth red brick work.
It's certainly charming to see people living on the water, the entrance to the moorings has a cute letterbox for each boat. No doubt it would be a pleasant enough spot to moor up your house boat and enjoy life in the town centre.
It's certainly not giving back any of the history that you can see at Papermill lock or Beeleigh falls further along the canal. For that you need to read through the info board and imagine what it might have been like."
