The abandoned chapel... We headed out about an hours drive west from home to the beautiful St Catherine's Chapel, in Abbotsbury which overlooks Chesil Beach and the Isle of Portland (South Coast of England). It was a chilly, windy day but well worth visiting. "It's a 14th century chapel built by monks as a place of pilgrimage and retreat. The chapel has 'wishing holes' where local women used to pr...

Did you guess the answer? This is St. Catherine's Chapel on the Rock. One of my business partners actually attended summer camp just behind this place a long long time ago. St. Catherine's is not only super photographic, but a popular place for weddings and other events. Such a cool stop to check out. It was built in 1916 and is beautiful any time of year, day or night. #thingstodoincolorado #...

Reviews Summary

St. Catherine's Chapel is praised as a quiet, serene, and historically significant site in Exeter, offering a poignant war memorial experience. While the ruins are roofless and windowless, their historical depth and atmosphere are highly valued. Some visitors note that the site could benefit from further upkeep, but its unique character and accessibility make it a worthwhile visit.

"St Catherine's Chapel is a Grade II Listed Building in the centre of Exeter. The Chapel was built alongside the former Almshouses and is the most striking part of the ruins. Originally a two-storey building it is still standing to its full height, though of very small dimensions (about 6m by 3m) and now with no roof or windows. The Chapel eventually fell out of use and was later used as a carpenter's shop. The whole structure was destroyed by fire 4 May 1942 and the ruins remain as a War Memorial."

Guy Burgess

"A quiet and poignant place.
It's redevelopment into a memorial is quite clever, although sadly a little run down at this stage.
Despite this, it is rich in history and archaeology, and the ruins of the burnt out chapel make for an interesting visit.
It is reasonably wheelchair friendly and has disabled access, although in some areas, the ground is uneven."

Isaac Levi

"A well preserved Chapel close to the Cathedral and well worth the visit if you’re in the area."
