Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise St Giles' Church Stoke Poges for its beautiful, serene, and picturesque atmosphere. The historical architecture, from Saxon to Norman and Tudor periods, is a significant draw, as are the stunning memorial gardens and lake. Its connections to poet Thomas Gray and its role as a filming location add unique appeal.

"⛪️Beautiful, serene, picturesque. Parts of St Giles’ Church date from Saxon times whilst much of the chancel and tower are Norman. The building has been added to and developed over the years. There is a Tudor side chapel (Hastings Chapel), which was integrated with the rest of the church by the Victorians, and the Vestry was added in 1902. The restoration of the Chancel, Hastings Chapel and Tower was completed in 2016-17. The church has historic links with the poet Thomas Gray (1716–1771), who wrote his ‘Elegy written in a Country Churchyard’ whilst visiting his aunt, who lived in the village. He is buried in the churchyard. The memorial gardens with a stunning lake are a must-see and overlook Burnham Golf Club on the other side."

Francesca Gomme

"Peaceful place and the filming location for the pre-titles sequence of For Your Eyes Only. Your can see Stoke Park from the back of the churchyard (Goldfinger filming location for the golf scenes)."

Tom Price

"Beautiful old church.Stained glass has got to be some of the finest. If you go there you can take a walk around the memorial gardens."
